XBox and XBox related questions

Ok, friend of mine has an XBox. I have some music he wants to put on it. Problem is, it's on a burned CD. From what I've been told, the first incarnation of the XBox would let you rip burned CDs, the second (which he has) wouldn't, and the current won't let you rip them and comes with all the XBox Live software preinstalled. Anyways, is there any way to get that music onto the XBox? Is it possible to hook it into my LAN and, via a computer and the network, place the music files on his drive (Assuming the files will be a format I can put them into and I can find where they need to go. Further assuming, of course, that this'll work to begin with.)?

Next question is about the controller. The controller connects to the XBox via a mutated USB connector, correct? So, is there a way to cheaply make an adapter? By adapter, I mean something I can put on the end of the plug and connect it to the computer and when I'm done, put it back on the XBox. Would Windows support it in any fashion?

Just two things I've been curious over for awhile now. Oh, and don't start a flame war. I realy don't care which console you think is better. This isn't even ABOUT that.

has he tried ripping? i'll be pissed if it doesn't work because alot of local bands here (and i'm sure other places) use a cd burner to make the cds they sell at their shows

also yes you can make an adapter by replacing the xbox plug with a usb plug (i suggest doing this with the breakaway section from a broken controller's cable so you still have the original section)

you can also buy these cables already made

I don't recall us ever trying, but I do recall him saying it wouldn't work... I call and ask him later.

I should have specified a bit more when I asked about the adapter. I bought a third party controller to keep at my house so we don't always have to borrow one (he feels it's pointless for him to get one since he never plays with anyone else unless he comes to my house). This controller doesn't have the breakaway part. How would you do it like that? I'm not afraid of making something, so long as it's within a reasonable price range and doesn't involve mutilating the controller.

alpha1, just what is "murning music"? I'll assume you meant BURNING music. Do you even KNOW what I have on burned CDs that he wants? Stop assuming its stolen, that is not always the case.

I've got a newer xbox with the samsung drive and live preinstalled, it rips burned CDs fine. Some of the older drives would have problems with burned DVDs, but I never heard anything about the CDs. Also about your controller ?:

I have an Xbox and the only way I've found to burn music is CD-RW's or just use the real CD.
the Xbox will accept SOME brands of CD-R but you never can tell if it will accept them or not.
So It's best just to stick with CD-RW's.

Yeah, but if you ever want to use Live, I wouldn't advise messing with things like that.

My Xbox has never had a problem ripping CD-R's. I have the one with the newer Drive (and Xbox live came preinstalled on dashboard).

I'm not sure about the controller...

Thanks for the link NoESC.

So for ripping CDs, CD-RWs should work? Seems like everyone has a different answer, which is leading me to believe that overall, the XBox is just rather picky over what burned CDs it chooses to rip.

More stuff to look into...

Well I was ripping off of maxell 650mb CD-R's without problems. I've never heard of the Xbox not reading CD-Rs before myself.
