Don't buy music at wal-mart
2004-03-25, 9:36 AM #1
...because they censor music without telling you that it's been censored. You go in there thinking that your'e getting the regular edition of the album, but what you're really getting is the radio edit with a bunch of stuff bleeped out. That's false advertising. When you take it back, they won't give you a refund b/c you opened it.

I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart doesn't censor the CD's. To do so, they'd have to open it themselves. Wal-Mart purchases their products from various comanies. It is the people who produce the radio edits of songs that are responsible, and it's the people in charge of packaging the CD's who are responsible for informing you whether the song is censored or not.

I bought a Megadeth album from there and realized AFTER I opened it of course that it was censored. Most stores have two versions, one that says explicit and one that says "clean" - I won't buy music from them again.

Uhh, yes they censor music. No, they don't do it without telling you. I've never bought a cd from Wal-Mart and I was well aware of the fact that they require *clean versions* of any album they sell. Personally I think it's pretty cool.

The way it works is, the artist puts out a cd, and Walmart tells them that they won't sell it unless they make a clean version (ie, no searing, objectionable lyrics, etc.). It is their peragotive to request this. If the artist does not want to make a clean version, then Walmart says Ok, and just doesn't sell their album. If they do agree, they cut out or dub over the swearing or objectionable content, and the cd is then sold at Walmart. There's no secrecy involved in the process. In fact, I believe that if you look on the cd you will find something that says that it's been modified from the original version (similar to the message that plays at the beginning of full screen movies or movies playing on television).

So don't be so quick to judge Walmart to secretly editing cd's, when the fact is, they've been doing it for some time and have made no attempt at hiding the fact, and have even promoted what is in their opinion the morality of editing said CD's.

In short, this can be chalked up to lack of consumer research, rather than underhanded business dealings by the corperate giant.

I didn't know people didn't know Wal-Mart censors their CDs. It always seemed like pretty common knowledge.

I'm not sure what CD you bought, because every time I go into Wal-Mart, all the CDs have some indication of censorship on the little sticker that wraps around the top of the case. For instance, I saw "Marilyn Manson," and the next line said, "Golden Age of the Grotesque (Amended)."

It's not some sneaky, devilish attempt to try and trick you out of your money -- it's to put forth a more "we're for the family" image. So, yeah, welcome to five years ago.

It's not just music. Many games have been changed just to get Wal-Mart's approval. At least with games you can make a patch that changes it back.
2004-03-25, 4:13 PM #14
I didnt know about it either, but that's probably because no stores that I know off down here sell censored music.

the only CD i ever bought at walmart i didn't have to worry about because all the lyrics were in german...

and they do have "edited" on the price sticker for cds that are edited... you will also notice if the parental advisory label is missing

i love wal-mart's "we're family friendly store" image... they only sell "clean" cds but they will sell M rated games without much of a problem....

I remembered reading something about it, and it doesn't surprise me. However, most of my music purchases have been either Christian or not terribly objectionable, so I'm not personally experiencing it.

I'd rather pay $14 for a CD at Walmart than ending up paying several dollars more at my local Sam Goody's, unless of course it's just something I can't find anywhere else.
2004-03-25, 5:56 PM #17
I'd rather buy music [or anything else] from a smaller business that actually needs my money and doesn't try to buy artists' free speech. That's just me. Of course, I'm still a little biased after Walmart paved a lake here to build a new store.

Now that's progress. We have lake here, and I've always said that we should pave over it. I mean what do we have now? A useless mass of water. We could have something useful there, like a parking lot. It'd be nice.

I found a way around this. Break the CD and say when you got home and opened it, it was broken. Then return it for another CD, same CD then leave. Come back a day later to get your refund.

When I bought Max Payne 2 for the PS2 last Christmas, it kept freezing and breaking on me. All my other games were fine. So I took it back, exchanged it for Max Payne 2, then took it to another Best Buy and exchanged it for a DVD set of the second season of Highlander.

First we should get one thing straight. WalMart can't censor anything. Only the government can censor things. What WalMart does is provide a service to people who want to listen to music without hearing the explicit content of most. For many this is a motivation to buy music, and other things, from them.

You shouldn't knock WalMart for this. If anything they should be praised for offering the alternative. If you don't want cleaned up versions of media simply buy from someplace else.

I think censoring is stupid. 90% of the time when you are going to buy something u usually know what stuff is on it. And if you dont than that is what the little parental advisory thing is for. We know what they are saying so who cares.

I remember with a few DVDs containing "unrated bonus materials," Wal Mart and Target did not carry them when the originally came out. Until quite a while after it was released you couldn't get Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in either store becuase of the vulgarity in the deleted scenes. I heard about that online and then checked it at my local stores, which now, since it does sell well, carry the movie but at the time i checked, they did not.

There are some CDs i've seen a walmart carry uncensored versions of, like Tenacious D's album, but that's just becuase its popular enough these days. It seems if it sells well enough, they will not hesitate to sell "unclean, and immoral" entertainment

And anyone can buy it, including children. Many parents don't check out what their children are listening to. And I hardly think children look for a parental advisory label. Wal-Mart is trying to keep a good image buy making it impossible for minors (or anyone, for that matter) to purchase objectionable material from them.

If you want something uncensored, buy it somewhere else.
