First impressions...eh. They have work to do. I'm not sure I dig the scientist who is seemingly on a constant caffeine rush. I'm willing to give it time. Most shows start out as crap. Stargate SG-1 got better as seasons progressed. Star Trek: The Next Generation's season one was like bleh. They tried to be like TOS and didn't work. Now it's me favorite show.

In a brief synopsis, can someone tell me what the premise is all about? And what's up with a different colored stargate floating in space?

I'm kind of curious about Ms. Stargate's (a.ka. Wolvie17) opinion too.

BTW, I was Gandalf1120. Now I'm this.

The atlantis gate is a part of the gate network in the pegasus galaxy. The new gate has rotating blue lghts rather then the simply glyphs of the earth gate.

Travel by the gate network in that galaxy is commonly used with ships, so some planets have their gate in orbit. the atlantis gate command center had several gate vehicles, one of which, (nicknamed the puddle jumper) has a remote dialing device on the dash of the ship allowing them to dial gates that are in fact in orbit.

Rather then the old gou'ould aliens, they have a new nemisis, the hive like wraiths who are suppose to have defeated the ancients, who have been credited to the creation of the gate network in the first place.

thats all i know, I have not seen the show yet, but i've picked some of it up as i read reviews and plot synopsis' i reserve actual judgement until i see it, but it LOOKS promising, if they do it right.

I liked the earlier episodes of Stargate, but later in the series, it just got too convoluted and i lost interest.

The Ancients lived on earth several million years ago, but had to abandon the planet when a plague begam wiping them out. They took their city, Atlantis, with them to the Pegasus galaxy where they began to repopulate. I''m not sure on the timing, but the Wraiths showed up, overwhlemed the ancients with their numbers and pretty much took over the galaxy.

The Atlantis team went through the gate looking for ancient technology to help with the fight against the Goa'uld. The got through the gate, but are unable to establish a wormhole back to earth due to a lack of power, but can generate enough to explore the galaxy they are in. So, they are looking for a new power cell (ZPM) to power the city and the gate the get back in contact with earth.

Enter the Wraith. They are an alien species that live on the life energy of other beings, so they harvest humans (decendants of the surviving ancients) so to speak. The sleep for centuries while the human population grows then cull the humans to sustain themselves. They find out that there are 6 billion people on Earth and now want to go there to feed. However, the only gate in the Pegasus galaxy that can establish a liink to Earth is the one on Atlantis.

Other stuff happens, but that's the basis of it.

Personally, I like Dr. McKay. I thought he as pretty funny the times he was on SG-1 and I like Major Shepard too. He cracks me up. I think some of the show is a little meh, but I have enjoyed it thus far.

ok ive been saving this rant for aw hile now after reading all those atlantis threads. so this is kind of also directed at all the people who have posted stuff on those threads, and are just waiting to post the same stuff on here.

i think just like all shows, atlantis needs time. their cast hasnt even clicked yet, or know eachother that well. for people who seem to have an issue with the lack of military feel, i dont get why its required. if you want them operating off a military base, why even watch the off-shoot program. stick to stargate and beg them not to end it ever because if they kept that 'off the miltary base' thing they might as well not have created the new show. also, they've kept quite alot of the militaryness into it. i dont mind it turning more into a scifi show, because it seems about the same when it comes to technology problems in episode plots. whenever theres tech-babble in stargate sg1, dont act like it makes perfect sense to you, so dont complain when at the end of every atlantis episode stuff magically ends up making sense as well. because thats just how the episode-based shows are. you have to have a resolution. on earth, we have carter, who just because shes sitting on earth, can come up with a solution using alien technology and viewers wont mind. yet when mckay does it using alien (ancient) technology in another galaxy, its "OMQ TOO SCIFI LIKE WORMHOLE X-TREME!!". its a new show and its doing really well for the first season. just coz its got the same creaters and same crew does not mean it'll be up to par iwth sg1 any time soon, or in my opinion ever. im far too attached with sg1. if youre going to start picking apart the realism of atlantis vs. sg1, answer me this bout realism: why does evreyone speak english! and ....like an american for the most part.

exactly. it cant be completely realistic. so get used to the perfect advanced tech-solutions and what not. stargate was a good show not because of the actual scifi aspect of it, but because of its story and characters, and thats how i look atlantis. how well is the story going for a show that isnt even at half season of its first season yet, and how well are the characters coming along. can i hear a quote and say 'thats distinctly sheppard' or 'thats something ford would say' etc... and on a happy note im totally impressed wiht how from sg1 to atlantis, they moved the atlantis music over, and when they played the atlantis intro theme for the first time it didnt feel like a new awkward piece of music at all. i loved it.

ps. i heart both my stargates :D and i like the fact that sheppard is funny. not o'neil funny (coz hes not o'neil), but funny. RDA just basically took his real life personality and slowly morfed oniel into that. he even admits it. and in his case, it worked out coz hes hilarious.

oh and as for the show not being as funny. it will get funny! if ou actually watch stargate, you'll realize a lot of their jokes are funny if you know alot of the shows history, or how the characters are. like teal'c jokes about his eyebrow raisey thing. people in atlatnis havent even eben around long enough to have any 'thing' that they do. so wait around a descent time, then get so technical about the criticism.

I prefer it being so different, that's a problem that's plagued Star Trek for the last few years. Such as Enterprise directly using plots from Voyager episodes.

Though I really don't like the Wraith that much, they just haven't been really scary or actually felt threatening. Right now they're more like what Voyager did to the Borg.

As long as they derive away from the Stargate's classic: Holy ****, someone's been kidnapped! Let's go save them!

Ok I'm getting it now. So ALL the Ancients are destroyed, yes? I thought that the beings such as Oma Dasala (sp?) were the Ancients. I'm a little behind on SG-1. But I thought I heard that in an episode in season six.

heh..... seams like the forum in SG-1 Archives (which im a member of also)
Atlantis isnt as great as i thought it would be, tho, it is in its infant stages. I think its a bad idea to have writers that work for both shows, since you can notice it in episodes of both shows. Example:
Atlantis: an energy sucking shadow being is let loose
SG-1: a shadow-like being of what remains of Anubis is let loose on the Mt. Chianne facility, taking over personelle
Tho, i do like the new look of the gate, that cool-blue tint. The sounds that the gate makes while dialing is annoying, just a clunk sound that repeats over, and over, and over... At the moment, i prefer SG-1 over Atlantis

I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

Many ancients accended, like Daniel Jackson did at the end of season 5, to avoid being killed by the plague. They are still around, but they don't interfere with the rest of the galaxy. They are just there, despite their supreme powers because using them to interfere, like Daniel did at the end of season 6, gets them descended.
