Sounds like HL2 is going to be done with Shader Model 3.0. That is, nVidia added it to the list of games that support it. So this, if it's true, means that 6800's have a big advantage over the X800s. I was holding out hope for them too.

Ah well. Thoughts?

CS:S already looks great on my 9600XT at 1280x1024. SM3.0 or not, I don't really care. It's fun as hell on my machine the way it is :D

CS:S is no way to correctly determine how HL2 will run.

Bingo.

I selfishly hope HL2 DOES use SM3.0. :)

I have to agree somewhat with you. That remake of Dust is very simple, archi-wise. I still get upwards of 60 fps in the video stress test though, so I'm still not complaining about how my 9600XT seems to be handling things.

The 9600 XT will handle it okay, make no mistake, but something tells me CS:S will be a whole lot less demanding than HL2.

The game was built on the 9600XT, I see no reason why it should just run OKAY on it.
Think while it's still legal.

Other than the new physics, textures changes and other details, graphically CS:S doesn't really seem much more demanding. I mean, Dust is boxy, and can't really be done any other way.

I've got HL2 preloaded, so I'll be able to see how my baby holds up as soon as it's released :)
