I hate PCs. Why is it that nothing with them is ever simple?

The coded error messages. The processes no one can name because they use gibberish for a title. Things that often work completely OPPOSITE of how they should.

I tire of this garbage fairly quickly. And now I have one more item to add to my never ending list.

It all began when I decided to copy a file from a CD to the Harddrive. Normal procedure. If anything on a PC can be called that... More specifically, my dad went and ripped some audio off the 2001 DVD for me and gave it to me in the form of an .aiff file. All well and good.

So I plot the two files into iTunes for a quick listen. One was about 6 meg, the other 50 some. iTunes is set up to import any files I drop into it to the library. So it did that. The 6 meg file went quick. The 50 some meg file though, never seemed to move anywhere. But my harddrive access light seemed to tell a different story. Eventually I grew tired of seeing nothing happen, and closed all programs, checked the Task Manager, which claimed my CPU was also at 100%, which is completely WRONG (I've seen it when it gets up there, it didn't respond like it was at 100%). So I close down the tasks I don't recognize in there, and then pop the CD. I wait. And wait. And wait some more. The light doesn't go out.

I log off. The light doesn't go out. I reboot. The light doesn't go out. I shut ALL the way down and boot up cold. The light *does NOT* go out.

So I now have this perpetually lit harddisk access light that just gets brighter when in use.

WTF?

Am I missing something here? Is it always supposted to be lit? Every other access light I can recall didn't act that way. I don't remember this one acting that way, though I don't ever really remember paying real close attention to it.

Gah. Why are PC's such a pain in the ***?

The only plus out of this ordeal is that I have Hal boasting the 9000 computer's service record on start-up.

I took the wires connecting my case lights to the motherboard off for some reason, and didn't replace them for about 8 months. During that time, I had no hard drive light. Luckily, I had a really loud hard drive, so I didn't really need the light.

Mabey, instead of your PC being stupid, you are. Some day I'll start a tech support agency that says that to it's customers. Anyway the hard ships of a PC are 1/2 the fun. Mabey even 3/4 the fun. When you spend hours fixing you PC and then you get on your game with the truly awesome graphics and controls, think of it as your reward, the reward that the dumb console boys who gave up don't get. Then in your 1337 and awesome glory shout 1 @/\/\ 2 1337 4 j00!!!!

I knew someone that threw in his Win98 disk by accident, when he wanted his WinXP disk in, so he took it out replaced the disk and pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL, but then he noticed, that the keyboard was not plugged in! It was like 15cms or so away from the connector on the comp. He plugged it it, and the same keyboard didn't work... 0_o.

We work instead of watseing our loves on consoles. We will have valuble skills both working to buy the PC's and working on the PC's them selves. Console users get none of that.

If you're plugging mice or keyboards into PS2, you have to reboot Windows before they'll work. If it's on USB, you don't, and XP will usually be lovely and use something from its driver database to make it all functioning. You should probably install the latest drivers, though, to make sure all the special buttons and things will work.

I don't think you understand, the keyboard was not plugged in when he pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL which restarted his comp, but when he plugged the keyboard in it didn't work!

Not always. I think it depends on time of the month.

Heh, then it obviously got pulled out after he ctraltdelled it. perhaps we was so angry that it was yanked violently from its socket.

also, is there an abbreviation or contraction or acroynm for "CTRL+ALT+DEL" or a verb form thereof?

Nope, he didn't pull it out, he looked down and noticed that it was not plugged in. In the thread, many people gave ideas to what could have happened, and some that have seen similar things:

I'm familiar somewhat with the phenemon.. its called electrical induction by strong magnetic fields. So that would explain the reason why you were able to reboot that computer w/o the connector being anywhere near that plug.

Eh, I think these people need to read up on Electromagnetism before calling on this "phenomenon".

Seems my *****ing about the problem fixed it. My computer is slowly becoming fearful of me. This is good.

In short. I threw it into Hibernation last night like I always do. This was around 1:30 AM. I come back to it not but 15 minutes ago (roughly 2:00 PM) and the light now functions like it should again.

-_-

So, lets get this straight.

Logging out didn't fix it
Rebooting didn't fix it.
Shutting down didn't fix it.

But putting it in Hibernation for a few hours did fix it.

Wash out the inside of the case with Bourbon.

Usually does the trick for me.

I'm sorry that I like my computer to work the way it should.

I don't want to have to study the light to see when the computer is accessing the HD. If it was always lit, I'd have to do that. If it ISN'T always lit, a quick glance suffices.

Sounds like you putting down one thing to elevate another.

That in it's purest form is a fanboy.

I love PCs, and despise consoles so much that I'd never spend a single dime on them, but even so--man, Obi, you need to learn that Consoles really aren't so bad as you portray them to be.
