Nintendo DS or Playstation Portable?
2004-09-06, 8:51 PM #1
What new gen hand-held system you looking forward to? The Nintendo DS or the Playstation Portable?

Me, I'm looking forward to both but the PSP is a bit more interesting to see because of it's tech being so powerful for a little hand-held. It is about as powerful as the PS2, which is impressive for such a small machine. The DS is slightly more powerful than the N64 and it uses a PDA-type pen interface so that looks interesting as well.

Both look pretty amazing, but I'm just looking forward to the PSP slightly more.

I'm looking forward to the DS more, but the PSP looks cool. The DS seems like it will be a lot cheaper, and have a longer battery life. The touchscreen looks like it can have a lot of inavation in games, that's the main reason I'm looking forward to the DS. And it has a Metroid game. I'd get any system that has a Metroid game.

The PSP moreso than the DS, though I will admit as time wears on, the DS looks better. The PSP just seems cooler though--I mean who won't love portable Gran Turismo 4?!

I am looking to the PSP, but the DS is also very interesting. If the new Metal Gear game for the PSP weren't so... different... from previous MG games, it would win hands down. It still may, but I doubt it with the wierd new gameplay system they've implemented.
2004-09-06, 9:27 PM #7
I'm leaning towards Nintendo DS.

PSP looks like another Game Gear in it's battery life issue. That is a huge plus for DS.

I also like the fact that DS is trying something new, so maybe we'll get some new type/style games.

I don't really have time for handhelds, and PSP doesn't seem like anything new to bring to the market. DS has some new features, so I'm willing to go with DS over PSP right now.

Hrm, I didn't know Demon Nightmare was still around. I thought he fell off the face of the internet when the TMPTC died.

The two screens thing seems a bit silly. "I can look at the map on screen, and drive on the other!" What good uses are there for it? Maybe an inventory screen, maps, objectives, but what else? I can't think of any real good reason or uses for it. I suppose it's a good thing I'm not in the game industry, I'd get fired.
2004-09-06, 9:33 PM #9
I try to be impartial on these sort of things but I'm a hopeless Nintendo fanboy from wayback so I'll go with the DS, the touch screen is an awesome idea.

Why does everything have to be innovative? *sigh*

Also, Sony said, regarding the PSP's battery life, it quite simply depends on the game. It could be 5 hours. It could be 10 hours. Nobody really knows. The true question--if you're playing a handheld for more than five hours at a time, what else should you be doing? :p

...yes, what a terrible burden that'll be. What next, the ability to watch television and make phone calls? The insanity of it all! Won't someone think of the customers?

I've already seen some nintendo portables, and even though I'm not much of a playstation fan, thier attempt at a portable just intriuges me.

I was at Best Buy yesterday (big Labor Day sale) and I saw a refridgerator with a TV built into the door. It was a 14" LCD screen. Ridiculous.

I will not. Needs more steering wheel.

Wait.

The PSP is as "about" as powerful as the PS2? ...Really?

I'm not too clear on the "about" part, but if it's even close, that's pretty amazing.

(...I don't really have an opinion of the two or anything, I've never been too hip to the whole hand-held gaming scene, I just wanted to say...it seems pretty neat...yeah.)

Nintendo DS. By far.

the PSP has outstanding graphics for a portable console. I'm going with PSP.

EDIT: PSP has nearly the same graphics of the PS2. DS has slightly lower graphics than the N64.

Gran Turismo 4 + Wireless MP > * :p

Not to mention it's getting so many other AWESOME titles. Viewtiful Joe, the new Metal Gear Solid game (though it is different--hopefully Konami won't fsck it up.), Dynasty Warriors.

Though as far as games go, I guess it's up to you.

Side-question: anyone play the PS2 version of Viewtiful Joe?

edit: there are a lot more titles than I thought. http://www.gameskanker.com/psportable/a2z_playstation_port.htm

Neither. I buy portables for ports of old NeS titles, so that I can have something to do in the car. I do NOT want a fully 3D submersed RPG on my handheld. I just want a goofy sidescroller, an old Mario game, Zelda, and Final Fantasy. If I wanted a portable in my car, I'd install a flat screen, and an x-box, and probably spend less.

I vote PSP.

Serioulsy, did anyone complain to Nintenndo that they didn't have a second screen? I think the second screen is totally utterly useless. I mean, I saw screens of someone playing Mario Kart on it. OMG THE MAP IS ON THE SECOND SCREEN OOOOOOO!!!!!! Freaken useless. I saw the same thing with like 5 other games. The game was on the bottom, and some stupid map that really doesn't help at all was on the second screen.

I'd like to point out that although I voted DS, Metroid Hunters is going to suck unless they get the controls sorted out. I believe you tap the screen to fire, and rub across the screen to turn? No thank you.

I'm definately looking forward to DS, although I doubt I'll be able to afford either that or the PSP for a while after they're released. Even if I could, I'm not sure I would bother - seems that most of the functionality relies on other people having one, and I don't know many people who're interested.

edit: for those who're interested, DS's latest design:

I'll have to go with DS, but not because I think the PSP is worse in any way. The DS is just something that'll fill my wants and needs better, and I tend to be a Nintendo fanboy anyway...

BTW... is it just me or isn't it odd that none of the new hand-helds are including analog sticks? Considering that a lot more 3d games are going to appear on the new systems that an analog stick would be better for 3d movement. Digital pads just suck too much for 3d games if the movement is anything like games such as Mario 64 and the like.

They are making it so that you can control Metroid Hunters using the buttons, no touchscreen, if you should so desire.

I think the same. I would've killed for dual analogs on the PSP.

True. It would be better if there was a lot more innovation though.

But, when two new handhelds are released, or a console for that matter, the one that's gonna be purchased from me first is the one that offers something new. PSP offers nothing more than a more powerful handheld to me.
2004-09-07, 5:51 PM #36
I don't really play handhelds that much, but I voted for the PSP just to keep the race close.

So far the offerings from sony kick ***, while Nintendo's offerings look to be a bit of hit-and-miss. If it hits, it'll be cool, and awesome. If it doesn't, it'll crash...and burn...and plummet...and suck. Yeah.
