Futurist Manifesto
2004-09-06, 10:38 PM #1
I just read the Futurist Manifesto by F.T. Marinetti, which was written in 1909. From those who have read it (and if you have not I encourage you to see if you can find a copy online) I would ask what your thoughts on it are, because I'm still having a hard time believing someone actually wrote this and wished to be taking seriously, or at least believe it to be of any merit.

Also, make note to see the new featured "story" in my signature :)

Hahaha! It's funny that you should mention this... if you dont know my band is changing it's name to this.

I read it through a couple of times and I think it's fascinating. A little naive but I think to fully understand it you would have had to have been living in Italy in 1909. It's the same feeling I get in my hometown, too much gentrification and mothball culture (ultra conservative).

The Futurist movement is very similar to Mao's reforms in the 1960's, destroying 'Old China' to replace it with 'Modern China'. However, the Futurists seemed more content to change the culture and not the political landscape.

If you read the 14 points of the Manifesto, they're very brashful and energetic. It makes me want to kick open my door and burn down my school and proclaim it an act of reckless art.

I love it.

I find it more to be "Go do evil in the name of art" myself. I guess I don't quite have as much of a problem with being super conservative, just as long as it isn't keeping you doing bad things. I guess I just think there are much better methods of being energetic and open-minded and such without adopted hatred and such ;)

I always thought their manifesto was pretty disturbing but I love futurist art works.

Dynamism is a big influence on my work, though I was trying to capture movement in a similar way before I even heard of the Futurists. Learning about them was great for me as an artist. It was like when you read a philosopher for the first time and their words give structure and definition to thoughts you already had in only a vague, nebulous form.

We've got it in the arts classroom, but I've never bothered to read it.

My friend has a futurist cookbook.

I've read about the cookbook. It seems.... odd.

Didn't they discover and use drugs in the 1909's ...

But they went around on scooters, relaxed and groovy, and just saying 'Ciao!'
