...1.44 are becoming more and more obsolete... as the days move on. CNN.com discovered this way too late.

Sad this is, I still use my floppy for reformats. Good thing I have several kicking around...:D

Hmm. I still need a floppy drive, 'cause of the way our OSes are installed. Otherwise, I just stick it on our USB key.

I rarely use floppys... ever.

If i'm backing something up i use CDR's, if I'm transferring files between computers i use my MP3 player. I still have a floppy drive.. just in case i ever want to use it.

I use floppies to transfer things from one pc to another, if it's around 2mb i just split it with a splitter program. I'd move onto Usb stuff but i don't know where to get them and i don't think it'd be worth it since i don't transfer much more at a time - anyway, i've got a DVD writer if i have sudden urges... :p

The only reason I have used a floppy disk recently was to play Space Quest 2. I got the urge after playing Peasant's Quest.

I've not used a floppy for about two years. Now, if I want to send something from one PC to another, I'll either upload it, email it, or put it onto a USB harddrive thing.

Floppies are so useless once you get yourself a zip drive, that is if the other computer you are trying to transfer files to has a zip drive as well. At the college I go to, every computer has a zip drive so I have absolutely no use for a floppy drive. Plus, floppies die pretty freaking fast. Reliable PoS they are.

My stepdad bought a lap top, and it didn't have a disk drive. Instead he uses the DVD burner or the little removable memory card things.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Ha, I have one, I win. :p

Actually, I don't use floppies anymore. The most recent usage is when a PSX -> USB controller adapter came with it's drivers on a floppy.

The floppy was so slow I couldn't run the install from it, I had to copy it to my hd first. :p

Why do you need a floppy when you've got a gmail account? People could send you the storage capacity of 300 floppies and it wouldn't even put a dent in your inbox storage.

All of my computers have floppies but they're rarely used, usually just bootdisks, sometimes documents from friends.

even zip disks are nearly obsolete. They were great back in 1995-1996, back before the advent of cheap cd-r media, but they always were too damn expensive especially when CD recordables became cheap enough to be expendable. They held less than half of what a CD held, so I never saw the use of adding a zip drive to my older pc that had a 4x cd burner back when I got it.

Floppys are still useful on older machines if the BIOS doesn't support cd booting if you have to reload windows 9x.

I haven't used a floppy in over a year. I know this because I removed my floppy drive 2 summers ago, but it was dead anyway.

I use my floppy's a few times a month, mainly for bringing various word docs/jpg's down from my computer to the computer with the printer (our network is kind of flakey and my printer jams every so often which I never feel like fixing).
I have a signature.

Who needs floppies? I have an internet connection and a USB jump drive and those are waaayyy better options.

I use floppies as ninja stars when I'm fighting Nazi insurrectionsts. I also use them to move .bmps and stuff from one PC to another.

Last time I used a floppy was for a Linux boot disk that I needed to get a dual-boot setup done the way I wanted it. That was quite a few months ago. Other than that, I either send stuff via network, transfer via CD-RW, or in those extreme cases I've transferred via my digital camera (since it functions as a removable flash memory drive).

Well they said obsolete, not out of use. They'll be obsolete the minute blue-ray or anything else comes, but it doesn't mean they'll be out of use. Floppies have been obsolete for many years. CDs have been obsolete since DVDs arrived.

Perhaps, but CDs are still cost-effective for the amount of storage you get.

For that to be true, a DVD+/-R would have to cost 6.7x what a CD-R does.

They don't really if you go by average price...
2004-09-07, 9:41 PM #29
So maybe I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. But CD-Rs are still reasonable.
