My work situation

Well. I've been working at an ice cream shoppe for about 5 months now, a sort of summer job thing. And I thought I would be able to work throughout the winter based on my current schedule of workage (2 days a week, 6 hour days). That wasnt such a large issue, because I could still get my school work done, and keep the job.

The problem is, however, when summer ended, most the people left, and 6 people were the only ones still working there. My boss stepped up my schedule to the point of working 5 days a week, 6 hour shifts. With my current shedule of 4 AP classes and 2 honor's classes, marching band every friday and wednesday, fencing (Which I hope to take up again) drums, and any sort of social life whatsoever (I havent seen my friends in months.. Im not even sure they are alive)I simply couldn't do all those things at once.

So I quit teh job yesterday. I hated working there anyway, it was boring and my co-workers hated me. (They were all sort of college-aged stoner kids, Im an uber nerd). I also found out that another person was quitting also, leaving 4 people working there.

With 4 people working there, they would literally be working 6 hour shifts every single day, until they found some new employees.

I feel really bad about this, and I really dont know what to do. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would be pissed about having to work that much. But I simply cant do it all.

Feh... I dont know. If you even read this far, I commend you. Its late, and I keep internalizing this stuff and its keeping me up, and I needed to vent.

Did you provide two weeks notice? If so, then don't worry about it. If not, then you're a jerk. :p
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I did, but I still feel bad about leaving 4 people to do all that work, ya know?

It's your boss' fault for not hiring more people.

You have ervery right not to want to work anywhere. Quitting because of school should never be a problem at all.

Exactly. If you didnt want to work that's your choice, as long as you gave him warning according to your contract or union regulations, it's his problem not yours.

That's how I was over the summer... except 6 hours was 10. You act like 6 hours is a long time....

I'm still working there, but only on the weekends. My boss screwed me royally this week by 'losing my availability' even though she has it punched in the computer. She said it was my responsibility to find people to work for me if I couldnt make it when she's the one that ****ing 'lost' my availability (it was in the same folder it's always in). She could've called me while doing the schedule to ask about my availability (or looked in the folder). She had to go to a wedding and everyone else was maxed out at 40 hours so I was just ****ed. *****, I called in a report on the Corporate Conduct line and everyone's quitting because they hate her...

I once had a boss that was a major drug addict and he wouldn't hire anyone. It eventually got to the point where I was the ONLY third shift employee and was working EVERY day (14 or so days in a row), so I quit, didn't give a notice, and don't feel bad about it to this day, knowing that he is the one that had to step up to the plate.

Did you forget your co-workers were "college-aged stoner kids" who dislike you? As a self-realized nerd, you have absolutely no responsibility to even recognize that they're alive. You're outta that place, did it politely (2 weeks notice is baloney if you ask me), and shouldn't look back. Just shoot for 5's on your AP tests and go to Harvard or Brown or something (you did say "uber nerd").

P.S. - An afterthought: I sure wouldn't mind having someone as considerate as you for a co-worker.

oh please, you don't owe them a thing. you did exactly what you said you would, gave them appropriate notice. it's a part time job, it's not like you're screwing the whole company. you are replaceable, they're only in a mess because your boss hasn't hired anyone, which is in no way your fault. you were going to stay on anyway, except that other employees left, and your boss made it impossible for you to stay. stop worrying.

[edit: oh yeah, and if you're worried about the other people being forced to stay, just bear in mind that they probably will want all the cash they can get, and if not, they can just leave too. ensuring that the employees have an appropriate amount of hours is your bosses job, and you certainly shouldn't have to worry about them.]
