I hope to God its real, but it just reeks of hoax.

Well it is April Fool's Day so it wouldn't surprise me if this was a hoax.

Except that Google Email was announced months ago. If its an April Fools Hoax, they thought of it a long time ago.

Google is expanding its operations scope in really weird new ways lately, due to competition from Yahoo's newly-developed search engine or some such nonsense..

An even stranger service that they're now offering is research help - Google retains a staff of dedicated searchers who you pay to track down answers to any question you might have. Literally, these people google for you.

Google owns XD

And DSettahr, it's not totally unthought of for Google to have thought of this months ago. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

It's the "1000mb per user" that makes me just a teensy bit suspicious.

1GB of free storage space? I don't think so.

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

Well, if it *is* a hoax, then quite a few independent sources were either fooled by it or are going along with it.

I'd also point out Google's april fools about the new centre on the moon, which is more similar in style to their previous one about Pigeon Ranking, but I can't remember the link off the top of my head.

I think the 1 gig of storage space is most likely a hoax. But the rest of it I bet is real... and when Gmail finally comes out, I bet it will still be awesome.

Well, I emailed Google and asked them if they were opening up a Mars facility after their Lunar facility was in full operation, and this is the reply I got:
Quote:
Thank you for contacting Google about our Copernicus Research Center.

We've received an overwhelming response to this opportunity and are not
currently accepting additional resumes. We will, however, keep your
information on file should we have an opening in the future. At the
current staffing levels, we anticipate that we may need additional
applicants on or around April Fool's Day in 2104. Until then, we
appreciate your interest in Google and your taking the time to write us.

Sincerely,

The Googlunar Recruiting Team

From Wikipedia:
This is April Fool's Day. Some April Fool's hoaxes for this year:

    [...]
  • Google announced to start interviewing candidates for their new lunar hosting and research center.

    [...]

Things widely thought to be April Fools that actually weren't:

    [...]
  • The Associated Press reported that Google would launch an e-mail service with 1 GB of storage for each user.
