A while back, I posted that "streetclimb" video with the file name Monkey.wmv. Earlier today, I was browsing through my webspace, I saw the file, and thought to myself "I posted that ages ago, I dont need it anymore," so I deleted it. Within minutes, I started getting emails through RIT's Broken Link Messenger, an automated service my university runs to notify webmasters of any broken links. Turns out, someone had added the link to a chain email, and hordes of people have been downloading it all along.
I'm not upset, given that my university provides pretty much unlimited bandwidth, but in another situation where I was not so fortunate, I could be. While not technically hotlinking or leeching, I would've appreciated it if the person who had added the link to the email had asked my permission first.
In closing, I give you a screenshot of what happened to the last person who tried to leech images from my website:
