The Final (not really) Star Wars DVD thread
2004-09-08, 7:03 PM #1
Well, I have been among some who have scoffed at internet rumor and vowed to wait to see the re-released trilogy in so much as to ascertain the validity of the speculation. I accidently found this FoxNews.com article.

Highlights:

Quote:
Among the highlights of the show and the DVD:

* Hayden Christensen (search) is digitally inserted into the celebratory final scene of "Return of the Jedi," alongside a ghost-like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.

* Numerous tweaks beyond the "special editions" released in 1997 have been made to clean up the effects, including the first appearance of Jabba the Hutt.

* Fans speculated Lucas was jealous of "The Lord of the Rings" and so rushed his trilogy out on DVD early. But Peter Jackson appears in the extras, praising the films, talking about how they inspired him and comparing Lucas's creation to that of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The TV special [reffering to the upcoming A&E special] is the latest step in a campaign that is sure to turn the "Star Wars Trilogy" boxed set into one of the best-selling DVDs of all time.

Still, fans have flooded websites with their growing despair that Lucas refuses to release the original version of the three films, rather than the doctored '97 special editions that he has made even further changes to for the DVD.

Not that this really makes it official yet but at least the credibility level has been raised beyond that of the annomous internet site.

I don't see why people want the O-OT released on DVD, sure it'd be great to have all the versions, but Lucas doesn't see his movie as "versions" everytime he alters his movies he gets closer to what he visoned decades earlier.

I have my O-OT VHS tapes, and I'll convert them to AVI someday just for archival purposes, but I'm not upset about Lucas not releasing the original version.

Its sad, because apparently the changes he made for the THX-1138 movie are really good, and make it even better.

Also, apparently in this version, Han and Greedo shoot at the same time.
2004-09-08, 7:25 PM #7
No. Greedo shouldn't shoot at all. Who's the little whiney moron who decides that it's a horrible, horrible thing for Han to shoot Greedo? I'd like to eviscerate them and then have them watch me feed their family into a wood chipper.

It's easy, though, to enhance a film like that and make it better. He did make the original trilogy better in many ways with the SE's as well. The problem, to me, lies in actually changing not just content but story. Most of his SE changes were to content. A few were to story. Now even more changes appear to be made to the story. I'll defend him as the owner. I'll defend the new trilogy as his vision (even though I'm sure that when taken in context as the "definitive version" there will still be glaring flaws). But this endless medling with what was and IS a critically acclaimed franchise is childish. Especially with the virtual snuffing of any previous versions. The only thing that would make this better is if we have to live through another VHS re-release of the Special Editions marketted as the last time they will ever be available. Then in a few years we can hear the second Star Wars generation whine about how their Star Wars isn't available on DVD. I can hear it now: "No! Greedo shot first!"

I've read some info that the boxset will be disconinued before christmas. I'm assuming that it relates only to this initial release as I can't imagine Fox or Lucas only releasing one lot of DVDs and then closing off production (especially seeing how much money this will make). I've searched a bit but can't find any more info regarding this discontinuation and what it refers to. Does anyone know anything else?
2004-09-08, 7:47 PM #10
I'm fine with most of the changes, but I don't see why they put Hayden Christensen in the end of RotJ. Why not replace Alec Guinness with Ewan McGregor then? (Not that I think that's a good idea either). It just seems a little inconsistent to have a young Anakin but an old Obi-Wan.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

it would be easy to put both the OT and the SE on a double-sided DVD.

It's our opinions and thoughts, on our (or Brian's, rather) private message board.

Deal with it.

I agree--keep them virgin. I'd kill for a SW release on DVD, just digitally remastered (as in take out all the nasty noise in the film, clean it up, but add/delete NOTHING). *sigh*

What happens this time? Does the upper part of Han's body leap out of the chair digitally, while the lower part mysteriously disappears cause the slide merely moved across as he fires at Greedo?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Because he "ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader" after the duel in Episode III. His physical form was still alive, but his spirit was dead, and Luke set it free at the end of RotJ.

Hmmm....

Quote:
(Said at some point earlier this week):
Gee_4ce: Ahh payday - I'm going to get Star Wars on DVD on the 20th.

Gee_4ce's Dad: Haven't you already got that?

Gee_4ce: Yes Dad, on VHS, and it's about 7 years old. Besides there's all extra content and stuff.

Gee_4ce's Dad: But what's the point? You've already got it... why waste £30 on it AGAIN?

Gee_4ce: But... think of the extra features... and it's on DVD!

Gee_4ce's Dad: But you've already got it!

Gee_4ce: But...

Gee_4ce's Dad: You really shouldn't waste your money on that - get something else you haven't got instead.

Gee_4ce: Gah! You don't even believe in buying a DVD of a film later on when it comes.

Gee_4ce's Dad: Nope, what's the point if you already saw it?

Gee_4ce: To watch it again! (Wanders off looking throughly confused)

I think the enormity of this has escaped him somewhat, I mean sure, he's thinking about my money (which I've recently come into a lot of at the moment) and me saving it for other things... but still!

And no, I know I can just go and buy it anyway and will. :p

Your dad's probably smarter than most of us. I'm actually leaning towards not buying the DVDs. Star Wars is neat and all that but I've probably seen the trilogy enough to cover multiple people's lifetimes. I already own three versions on VHS (and none of them feature the newest craptacular edit of the end of RotJ) and the quality of DVD isn't that much better that my VHS versions seem unwatchable. Besides, a new DVD format will likely come around soon enough that will offer high-def video then all our DVDs will look as crappy to us then as our VHS does to us now. Of course Lucas will probably make everyone wait years longer than necessary to buy Star Wars in the next format. Nothing against Star Wars but it's just not fun any more.

i don't really care about it, changing that one 3 second shot isn't gonna impact the story whatsoever or make a real difference at all.

I'm just saying it doesn't seem like a must buy for me. If you don't own them at all it seems like a must buy for you.

I found this after they announced they would show Naboo celebrating at the end of RotJ:

Quote:
For the Even Specialer Editions DVD they should show every planet
celebrating, like this.

Hoth-A one armed Wampa emerges from his cave, sniffing at the air. His
eyes go wide and he throws his one arm up, screaming "FREEDOM!"

Dagobah-The creature that tried to eat Artoo emerges from the murky
water, throws up his arms and starts dancing around. He grabs a random
droid and pops it into his mouth, which he opens wide for the camera
as he swallows it down.

Yavin IV-Everything is silent, until suddenly, the giant temples
themselves grow arms and legs and spurt under the ground, dancing
around with each other.

Cut to stock footage of Martin Luther King, Jr. saying "Free at last,
Free at last, good god almighty, free at last!" with no explanation,
then cut to the next scene.

Geonosis-Geonosis is empty, but slowly, a single baby Geonosian peeks
his head out from the hive. His nose-thing twitches, eyes adjusting to
the light as he looks up to the sky and see's fireworks. He smiles
broadly, slowly walking out of his hive for what must be the first
time in years. He looks back to the entrance, waving his friends on.
Slowly, a hundred Geonosians begin to crawl out carefully, then they
all start flooding out and begin to make weird clicky sounds that can
only mean 'Freedom!'

Kamino-For some reason that they'll think up an explanation for later,
the Clones, in full armor, are dancing around with each other, yelling
'EVERYBODY PARTY! WE'RE FREE!' Taun We rolls her eyes lovingly, then
proceeds to make out with Lama Su ( dude, you know he's tapping that )

Asteroid-The Space Slug emerges from his home, coughing up a few
Mynocks before he yells triumphantly "At last the chains of oppression
are shed, at long last I will know the same peace and freedom my
forefathers did! How could I survive by eating metal, especially when
I never get to eat any out in the middle of nowhere?"

Endor-We see Emperor Palpatine's body, still falling from his plunge
down the Core Shaft, falling through the air. The camera zooms in and
we see he's got a happy smile on his face, raising the roof with his
hands and saying "Everyone's Freeeeee!" As it turns out, when Sith die
they automatically realize the error of their ways and get happy that
they died. Also, they reverse age, so it's actually Monkey-Eyes Old
Woman Emperor who we see. And there's gungans in the background.
That painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.

I think it'd be kind of neat if they changed Star Wars so much over the next 50 years that people will start to argue if Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill were in the original cast.

I wonder if Lucas' kids will be as destructive as their father.

I agree with this to a large extent. With the overall suckiness of most of the EU novels coupled with the declining quality of the movies, there really needs to be a shake up at the top with who has creative control of new SW content IMO....and yes I fully realise it's Lucas' right since he created it, but I'd honestly prefer nothing at all to some of the crap being released.
