(Reason third is in download manager is that I've never gotten around to editing the registry entry to allow more than 2 connections in IE and was too lazy to do it.)

A better question...why Debian Woody, and not Debian Sarge? Sarge has a better installer.

Actually segmented downloading made it slower, heh.

Almost 3 > 2. Not even stressed at that point either. Could probably handle a few more sustained 700 kB/s down connections.

Well lets see.... I just downloaded the HL2 preload at an average of 5.5 mb/s

I downloaded a 9mb gamefile in under 1 second before.

And just to rub it in your face, here is the 12mb Arrow Thieves TC
5886 translates to 5.8 mb/s

If you want to get that way, then I downloaded XP SP 2 in about 45 seconds at about 6 MB/s the other day...

Unfortunately, my university isn't as accomidating in the realm of computer technology. Most of the computers are "locked off" (you can only use IE and MS Office, the HDD is off-limits), so I couldn't take a screenie (no image program availible). Also, the bandwidth is only arround 875KB/second max (which is what I got for the UT2k4 demo a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far away...), but right now it's a crappy 239KB/sec.

Not when I'll be trying to get an ATI FireGL X3! They don't mean for you to game with those, but I will!

...Nah. I couldn't justify the price for that, so the X800 XT is probably what's in my future.

I downloaded a 50 MB file instantly. Instantly I mean that I clicked Save and it was done immediately after. It was too fast for the speed to be measured. Yeah, I'm with MB and DS at RIT.

Oops, I think you forgot that you were downloading the wrong distro. No matter, I'll point you in the right direction.

I agree with Mystic0. Debian is second to Gentoo in my book. :p
I mean, at least it's better than Mandrake or RH.

Well Gentoo takes bloody years to install, and debian just has the awesomeness of apt-get.

Ive never really had a go at portage.. is that similar?

Portage is awesome. You can install custom ebuilds with an overlay, and I am running an full testing box with unstable packages. You can use a stable box mixed with testing if you like also. You can also build your own binaries to be installed later with qkpkg! And even if a packages is really unstable you can unmask it with /etc/portage/package.unmask.

Right now I am installing xorg-x11 6.8 which has true transperancy!

Hmmm... I was about to make a miraculous conversion to linux and download Gentoo, but then I saw that it was a whopping 11 gigabytes in size... so no.

WTF? Gentoo is only 1 iso - 630 megs. 2 isos if you download the package CD.

Gentoo isn't long to install if you use the package CD. I installed Gentoo on my laptop 2 nights ago, only took 2-3 hours, even with compiling the kernel and xorg.
2004-09-11, 5:30 PM #32
You don't need any of Gentoo's isos to install it. All you need is a bootable Linux-CD that has chroot.

I run Slackware...

Speaking of which, I was able to download said distro in 10 minutes. Yay for OC-3 lines!

Might have wanted to check what those files were before "resting your case." Don't bother listening to someone who has Gentoo on two different computers and might actually know what they might be talking about.
2004-09-11, 8:42 PM #37
Looks like the smallest Gentoo distro is 78 megs.

Gentoo IS the best, but Debian is good to tryout beforehand too.

SuSE is great for more casual users, though I had some trouble with it in the past, but overall it was great.

There is no single Gentoo ISO. All you really need is internet access so you can download the stage 1, 2, or 3 tarballs. There is an official Gentoo minimal ISO that includes some useful tools for installation and a text based webbrowser for reading the installation guide.

You need to find a file called "install-x86-minimal-2004.2.iso". It will be the directory labeled "/releases/x86/2004.2/livecd/". You can download it from one of the following mirrors:

http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml

You can read the installation guide as you install.
  • Burn ISO onto CD with nero
  • Reboot with CD in drive and wait for the prompt
  • Type "passwd" to set a password
  • Type alt-f2 and login as root with your new password
  • Type "links2 -g http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml"
  • Press alt-f1 to get back to the first term to perform the install. Go back and forth between virtual term 1 and 2 as necessary.
  • While it is compiling type "links2 -g http://forums.massassi.net" ;)
  • Install takes aproximatly 18 - 36 hours on a modern machine. Almost all of it is automated.

Note that the stage tarballs are not on the minimal CD. You will need to download one of them with wget.

I am assuming you are installing this on an x86 machine. If you are not, you will need to read an alternate installation guide. PPCs and amd64 support is included.

Alright, thanks Mystic, but the install really takes 18-36 HOURS?! That seems like an impossibly long time (in which I would not be able to use my computer).

And I am running an AMD 64, so I would have to get something slightly different, right?
