Thread Ratings
2004-09-11, 10:03 AM #1
There are no rated threads on the first two pages of the discussion forum, and only one on the third. Should we remove Thread Ratings completely? Or are you guys still taking time to get used to the new boards, and will you start using them soon?

I say keep them, it's a useful feature, especially in like the Showcase.
2004-09-11, 10:05 AM #3
its handy, keep it.
2004-09-11, 10:05 AM #4
I say keep them, even if only in the showcase forum.

I didnt consider how usefull they could be in the showcase forum. But upon looking in there, I see that there are no rated threads there either.

I guess in the showcase is fine but everywhere else is seems pointless.

I seriously doubt enough people use or will use them to bother with keeping them. Some people use them seriously, others probably vote down just to play with them.

(And Yay! We can delete posts again!)

Yup.

But many people in the showcase forum still don't use them. So I guess it's an almost useless feature. Getting rid of helps save room too!

As I said in the original new forums thread, the number of views a thread has is a pretty good showing of it's popularity. ratings seem absolutely pointless, though I see how voting for a piece of work could be useful. as you say though, nobody's doing it..

The rating is just waste of space. It's better get rid of it.

I love you guys. Getting rid of all these features is like buying an expensive new car and, because it "takes up space" or "wasn't there on the old one", RIPPING OUT THE AIR CONDITIONING, POWER WINDOWS, AND CD PLAYER. THAT'S WHAT THIS IS LIKE.
2004-09-11, 11:47 AM #14
Even on the hottest days, I never use the air conditioning in my car. I would much rather drive with the windows down.

Most of us are saying it is because its a useless feature. I suggest you actually read the whole thread next time than to jump to conclusions.

I think it'd be nicer if the "rate" box was on the 'reply' page, perhaps an option list to the right side of this textbox. Sort of like the Smilies table. So if I'm typing out a long reply, I stop to think about something, and I 'rate' the thread while I'm thinking.

The reason it isn't being used much is because it's a little box that you pretty much have to go out of your way to use. If it was easier to access, it'd be more used. Perhaps a scale of 1 to 10 would be more useful too, or allowing continuous data (in the form of entering your own number) as well as the discrete data.

If you're not using those things, it doesn't really matter, does it?
I bet you have a lot of stuff you never use. :p

Massassi has spoken. 11-17 in favor of getting rid of them.

Make it so.

Hey, we are talking about the thread rating. Compare it to the plastic wrappings...

Make them a more obvious feature, like on the SA forums.
2004-09-11, 1:44 PM #23
Just because most people don't use it much, how is that a reason to remove it? It doesn't make the forums WORSE in any way. I bet nobody uses the "Show printable version" link, but there's not really any reason to remove it. No, there's no reason to have it there, but since it's there, why remove it?

Also, the "Forum rules" box is useless considering you may do everything on the list. The box above with the buttons for Bold, Italic, Underline, that is useless, considering that everyone should know the UBB code for it. Speaking of which, what exactly is the point of UBB code? Why not enable HTML and disable UBB? Or at least enable both. I'm sure lots of people here know HTML already, and it's pretty annoying having to learn a new syntax just for forums. HTML works fine on Liverjournal.

Anyway, "Rate thread" doesn't affect the forums negatively at all.

It's redundant as hell. I could tell how relevant a thread was before we switched to vB, based on the number of posts. Except now, we have number of views displayed, so we can use that, too. Why do we need a rating?

(BTW, it would be nice to have "Email Notification" disabled by default when we post.)
