New Idea - Exponential GMail

I was fooling around with my GMail invites today, and I found something interesting: not only can you send more than one invite to someone, you can send them to other gmail accounts.

So I signed up for 5 gmail accounts, and assuming a delay of one week per allowed invite, then the number of gmail accounts i have can theoretically double every 7 days...

Therefore, since there are about 16 weeks until New Years', I could have 5*2^16 or 327,680 accounts.

In one year (52 weeks), I could have 22,517,998,136,852,480 accounts.

Assuming that gmail isn't "open" yet, if I sold one invite from each of those accounts for one cent, I would be the proud owner of more than 200 trillion dollars. (Of course, this would entail every person on the planet buying something like 25,000 accounts.)

Not bad, eh?

I just made a thread on this. yes it works and yes I have 36 invites now.
Think while it's still legal.

Except that if you had 22,517,998,136,852,480 accounts, that would be approximentally 2251799 accounts for each person on earth. Which, I think, is a bit much. I don't think I'd want to spend 22.5 thousand dollars on gmail accounts, even if they were 1c each :p

I was just thinking of something like that not long ago..... but surely it would take ages to invite yourself when you start getting 100+ accounts ;)

So... how much storage space is that?
2004-09-12, 5:47 AM #11
21990232555520 terabytes
21474836480 petabytes
20971520 exabytes
20480 zettabytes
20 yottabytes

As far as I know, I don't think we've ever hit even an petabyte of data in one central location, and I know we don't have a exabyte of space on the entire planet.

Oh, and here is the amound in smaller denominations:
23058430092136939520 megabytes
23611832414348226068480 kilobytes
24178516392292583494123520 bytes
193428131138340667952988160 bits

There's petabytes in NASA servers at the Space and Rocket center down the street from me.

I wouldn't doubt that GMail will be having, or already does have, petabytes of storage. They'll need it.

I would imagine that would be some kind of 12 foot wide disc coming out the side of your machine.

According to wikipedia, "The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) in the USA has a 1 petabyte hard disk store and a 6 petabyte robotic tape store, both attached to the National Science Foundation's TeraGrid network."

Also, "The Internet Archive Wayback Machine contains approximately 1 petabyte of data and is currently growing at a rate of 20 terabytes per month."

That's a lot of storage.

To put it in context, load up Kazaa, or any P2P program that lets you see how many users are connected, how many files are shared, whatever. I don't currently have Kazaa, but I remember seeing 20,000,000 gigabytes worth of files on there. So that's 20 petabytes. And there were millions of users online.

It would be interesting to see whose personal computer has the most storage space. I know those L computers have like 4 terabytes or something.

my personal computer has half a terabyte of storage space. *Shungs*

anyway i think DirectConnect has a couple of petabytes to on their server or "shared"

What on earth do you need that much space for?
I've got 200 gig and I think thats heaps. It's going to be a long time before I fill that up.

Clearly you know nothing about supply and demand.

As gmail accounts have become more abundant, their value has been sinking like a rock. Originally they were worth about $100, then they dropped to $50, then $20, then $10, then $5, and now I think they're worth about $1 or less. Soon they will not carry value.

Yeah, I remember when I got a 4gb hard drive not long after they started making hard drives measured in GB and everyone was like "You'll never fill that up!" :D

True, but what if I had sold my 22 quadrillion accounts back when they were worth $100 a piece?

MMmmmm.... 2.2 quintillion dollars.
