Official report on my tumor...
2004-03-31, 4:48 PM #1
On the last day of January, I rented 28 Days Later. My wife says we watched the entire movie, as well as the alternate endings and all that fun stuff that usually comes on a DVD. I don't remember the movie at all. Then we went to bed, and an hour or so later, I suffered my first (of four) seizure. I don't remember that as well. I was ambulanced to the local hospital, only to be sent back home. Then I have several more seizures, then was bussed back to the hospital, and this time I was sent to Calgary (yes, Calgary, Alberta, Canada). Then I underwent a CATScan, an MRI scan, and it was determined that I have a brain tumor the size of a walnut. At this time I finally was able to collect my wits enough to remember the current events, but by this time, 2 weeks has gone by, and I don't, even to this day, still remember what went on! So I finally underwent surgery to have most, but not all of the tumor removed, and the samples were sent in for testing.

Officially I have a Grade 3 malignant tumor, with two cell types in it. The tumor is labelled a Glio Astrocytoma, which the term for both cell types contained in that term. Whee, the complicated stuff starts to come in the picture.

So far I have underwent several MRI scans, and several CATScans, one major surgery, and I am about to undergo radiation treatment. This radiation treatment goes Monday to Friday, about 10 minutes long, for 30 days. After that, its another MRI scan, and a follow-up appointment with my neurosurgeon. After that it's anyone's guess.

Ain't life great? Just thought you guys might like to know about me....

Damn. We don't want to see another one go. and especially not a guitar player either.

All my thoughts are with you, so with luck, a brain squirrel will eat the walnut and make it all go away... at least I wish.

That's harsh... Have you thought about (or been offered) any alternative or experimental treatments?

Yeah, I'm with Spork. There has to be an alternative to shooting the most vital part of your body with deadly radiation.

Is it true that when they operate on your brain, they keep you awake so they can monitor you?

It's called an awake craniotomy. It helps with mapping the brain and maximize the amount of tumor that can be removed.

I hope you pull through this, Snake.

I was sleeping when they operated on my head... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif] As I said, the month of February wasn't even a blur. I just have no memory of it at all. And my birthday was February 4th!

I do wonder however, am I going to glow in the dark after this treatment?!? LMAO!!!

Anyways back to seriousness here. Good luck with that, hopefully it'll all turn out for the better. Remember the chances of something bad happening are pretty slim. Hopefully you'll remember what went on in FEB. I wouldn't want to miss my birthday or anything... I'd guess it's kind of how you don't remember what falling asleep is like?

*manly hug*

Keep fighting those ba***rd cancer cells!!!

Btw did you hear of some new treatment for cancer? They inject the cancer tissue and stop its metabolism on a cellular level. thus starving the evil cells to death.
Cool.

But anyway, I offer my hope to you.

But if not... good luck. It's tough hearing about one in the same community going through this kind of thing.

I also found a *very* good read about brain tumors here. It's VERY informative. Again, Snake, hang in there, and I hope you get better!

Brain tumors are graded from 1 to 4, 1 being the least amount of trouble, or better known as "benign"; and 4 being the most troublesome, or "malignant". Thus, I'm stuck at Grade 3. I think I'm more around the borderline Grade 2-3, because I was originally Graded 2. But I won't know that for a while yet. April 15th to be specific.

UPDATE We went to Calgary yesterday for my first treatment , only to be told it was postponed until Monday. I don't think the care workers like me anymore.... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]
