I like playing pool down the pub myself :p

To be honest, I don't know anything about newer games, but if you haven't played System Shock 2 before, stick your head in a few bargain bins and be prepared to change your trousers regularly.

FPS:
Definately System Shock 2 - get the updated tex/model pack too, should be able to google for it.

Deus Ex - Another bargain now (NOT DeusEx:IW)

Thief 1/2/Gold(s) - Thief3 may run, I havn't gotten ahold of a copy yet (My home system specs are very similar to yours)

Strategy:
Empire Earth or Warzone2100, both are extremely large, though slightly dated now.
Total Annihilation (Core Contingency etc) is also an excellent strategy game

If you're looking for newer games, I'd hold out for HL2 (and save the money you've got for a newer video card - GF2 cant handle some of HL2's nifty features) Getting a Radeon 9600 or so would allow your system to play HL2 just about okay.

A new game doesnt have to be modern - Digging through bargain bins can reveal some fun games (found Anachronox and Arcanum a while ago)

Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield!!!!! But first download the demo to make sure it runs ok on your system. It only costs like, $20 CDN now (like $15 US).

Also, the last good game was pretty much Jedi Knight. The only other good games are just modernized relics from that golden era--like, for example, GTA3.

No, I don't think his comp will allow for HL2, even after adding a R9600; I suspect the final specs for HL2 to be similar to Doom3 (though HL2 seems to have higher polygon count, but less texturing and texture detail).

Here's a list of games I consider good that will run moderately well on your setup:

Dark Forces (If running under XP, you'll need a DOS emulator)
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
Dark Forces III: Jedi Outcast (lower the settings, though)
Thief
Thief 2
StarCraft
Diablo II

Also, try going to www.dosgamesarchive.com. They tend to have a lot of good DOS games (you'll likely need a DOS emulator, though). Also, if you're the kind of person that finds it acceptable, you can try emulating console games (possessing console ROMs is only legal if you own the real game). However, with CD-based consoles, you can get the emulator, then go and rent the games, and play them on your comp without a console! (no legal problems for that)

You made it in the first place with the wishes that I'd admit to it or shut up. Well, I didn't shut up. ;)

nottheking--Doom 3 has a way, way, way higher poly count than HL2 (unless I'm missing something. HL2's models are pretty standard, it's the faces that are amazing (able to speak in 40 different languages)). He should be able to run it okay with a 9600, actually, 800x600 medium details, maybe even 1024x768 medium. Unless they up everything. HL2's main point is realism, not great graphics (and no, they aren't the same thing).

That said--Ground Control 2.

...

I find every System Shock vs. Deus Ex debate ridiculous. They're not the same at all. It's like ridiculous Tangerine Dream vs. Vangelis/Jean-Michel Jarre, either one is godlike and the other one seems to be only a lame Coca Cola light clone.

F***ing ridiculous.

I liked all the three games though. Deus Ex the most, though.

Bah, pseudorant.
