So anyways, MaD CoW, don't feel bad. It was my fault. I sent this private message to DSettahr, and I will reproduce it here in full. This is my story:
Subject: The Wrath of Cool ***--A Heartfelt Apology Letter
I saw
this post earlier today and was highly amused by the idea that such a relatively insignificant message could be getting so many hits so I thought it would be even more amusing to pursue it. Hence my post that everyone should go to that thread and help increase its page views to over 10000. I tried this myself but it was working exceptionally slowly--waiting for it to load, clicking refresh every time, etc. So I decided to get a lot of people to visit it, if but only once. I tried to find places where a lot of people visit regularly and post links to the thread. I resolved that the Steam forums would be a good place to start, so I signed up for an account but I could not post yet, because I needed the moderators to approve my new account before I could post anything. So I tried to find alternative places and did
this and
this. Naturally, this did not yield instant results, although a few people may have followed that link. Anyways, when MaD CoW posted that he had Firefox auto-refreshing the site, the idea to do the same seemed quite tempting. However, as an Internet Explorer user I had to find alternatives. I asked a friend if he could write me a script and all he could come up with was a JavaScript that did not actually work; simultaneously though, I attempted to make one myself. The simplest and pretty much only thing I could do was make an HTML file with a META tag that refreshed the page every 1 or 2 seconds. I placed an IFRAME tag linked to the thread in question into this HTML file. When it worked, I copied and pasted the IFRAME tag in the source of the HTML file to over 50 times. This original file, that I named "cool ***" was quite crude and consumed too many of my computer's resources to be practical. The natural successor of "cool ***", "cool *** 2", contained IFRAMEs resized to 20 by 20 pixels. The final "cool ***", "cool *** 3", contained 100 of these IFRAMEs. When I "ran" the file it would take about 20 seconds to load completely before it refreshed. I left it running for a while until I noticed the Massassi forums running very slowly at which point I would close the file. When the Massassi forums could load normally again I would open the file again. I noticed that when my file wasn't running the views increased by about 1 every 3 seconds (possibly someone else doing that Firefox auto-refresh thing), however I believe that it was my HTML file that contributed the most significantly to the slowing down of the Massassi forums. The giant increase in hits was most likely due to my actions--from the 2000s to around 6500. This was pretty much the first time I've ever done anything like this.
I would like to apologize for what I did. I admit that at the time it was quite entertaining and even now, looking back, I am still quite amused. However, I am not a malicious person and I have enough empathy to appreciate when my actions have been harmful. My intention was to continue this until the page views reached 10000 and then I would stop. I realize how what I did do affected the other users. I do not enjoy slow load times on the forums either.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, it was my fault, I am to blame. Maybe some other people maybe contributed slightly, but I did, by far, the most damage. I do not seek forgiveness or respect. I just want to say that I am responsible. I do love Massassi very much, and beyond this, I never again wish to harm it in any way ever again. If you, or any of the other admins, so desire, you can ban me, punish me temporarily or permanently as an example. I, of course, do not desire any kind of punishment for my actions, but I accept that what I have done can and does have consequences, so if you wish to ban me or whatever then do so. I will not hold any grudges. Again, it was my fault. I'm sorry.
