they REALLY have to stop looking at porn.
2004-09-16, 6:52 PM #3
I have to check each box for ad-aware... that poor sob.
2004-09-16, 6:52 PM #4
Not too impressive. From the screenshot, I can accurately guess that the bulk of those ~85k items to be removed are Windows registry keys; some individual programs can have several thousand apiece... and I think the Windows default contains at least 100,000.

My computer from the factory had about 50-60.... lol I don't wanna know what they did on it before they shipped it out... .'/

I rarely get more than tracking cookies now, and only 1-2 per week or longer.

[Edit: Err... sorry for the double post... I forgot I posted O_o]

For her defense, she shares the computer with her 12 year old sister.

And no, I'm not saying her 12 year old sister spends all day looking at porn.

Sisters are the worst offenders by far when it comes to spyware. Any program they find that looks remotely cool, they have to download and install. Comet Cursor, Wild Tanget, etc...

Oh, she knows. My friend uses Opera. But she can't get her family to convert.

And DS knows what I'm talking about...

I once had to spend three and a half DAYS of my summer disinfecting my sisters computer.

My sister once had something like 10,000 adware instances, and 100 virus instances, with over 50 different viruses. I just kind of looked at her, and stared at her all evilly for a moment. Yeah.

Do you computer a big favor and get out that hand lotion and box of kleenix and go find yourself a dark corner! I'm sure it'll thank you dearly for your kind gesture :D

I disinfected a family computer about three weeks ago and turned up only about 50 instances in Ad-Aware, a couple of dozen in Spybot, but McAfee Stinger picked up 1983 infected files...

...I sent them to buy some virus software, also installed Opera for them (I was going to put on FF but version .9 just kept crashing).

I did get a case of beer and a bucket of KFC for my troubles though!

i know this might be bad, but i look at my setti stats to decide weather i need to 'clean' my system. because it's always running in the background and it calculates how long it take to do a work unit, once i see it getting slow i go, clean. But if the results are fast, or normal speed, i dont check for spy-ware/ ad-ware, disk defragement, or clear cookies nearly as much.

That's funny, but can be a fairly reliable measure...

...What's REALLY bad, though, is what kind of stuff OEMs pre-install on their computers. For once, my (younger) brother recieved an OEM computer as a present, and the first thing he did was go through and find wht was installed. It had more than 50 items of spy/adware pre-installed by Compaq, all of which were deleted. They come up to something like 5,000 Windows registry keys, which fortunately were removed when he un-installed the programs (which included ads for both AOL and MSN internet, among other things...). He said that that was enough to show that you shouldn't purchase an OEM computer.

Exactly! My sister installed both of those programs you mentioned, and our computer has been screwed up since. The worst part is she thinks she didn't do anything wrong, and when I try to explain it, she freaks out.
