Any Smarties can program Java?

Apologies for the delay in response Brian - sadly I don't have an up-to-date API :(. When you consider the API alone weighs in at about 25+Mb for the Java language and I'm on a dial-up connection, I'm just waiting a few more days before I start back at uni - with a significantly faster connection... ;) :D

[EDIT: But if Emon's nearly there, I'll stand back and wait for for his response (not that I have that much choice really... :o)

Okay, it appears to be a simple policy issue. I'll have it working when I get back from class today.

Okay, problem. It turns out you do need an applet to be digitally signed to read from a local disk. Which costs money. I'm looking for applets that let you do what you want and are free for non-commercial use. I've found one so far.

Edit: Um, can you run JSP on the server here?

Can you self-sign an applet? How much money does it cost? That's silly. Oh and no I don't think we can run JSP.
2004-09-24, 3:10 PM #45
Yes, you can self-sign. Most sites told me that self signing only worked if the certificate was installed locally, but it seems to be working.

Righto, almost done Brian.

Awesome!

The applet:

The XML file it generated on the server:

As you can see, some things aren't complete. Like, the progress bar, the pause/resume (not visible yet) and the submission name because I forgot that.

I'm currently busy making some crappy Flash menu (ActionScript is a disgrace to the name of OOP) for work, so I'll finish this hopefully within a week.

Emon puts my programming skills to shame :(

*shakes fist*
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

That looks awesome! Really the only thing I need to upload however is the actual file, because I have php scripts to do everything else. Especially with the images, I already have code to resize them, make thumbnails, etc.

Alright, I just included it to make it easier for the person to submit it all at one time.

Hrm, I was planning on forcing people to be logged in, then I decided against it. Maybe I should think about this a bit more.

I think having people login would be good.. especially if you could use the forum account system. That would stop people having ancient email addresses on their levels and make it easier to contact the authors. Because when they update their forum profile it will update every page which has their email on.. I mean if you really wanted a lot of work you could do something like deviantart and make peoples profiles have a list of their work :p

The plan is to link all levels by the same author if you are logged in when you upload your file, but I'm hesitent to force people to create an account just to post a level, and then they won't show up anymore anyway. I am of the mind to not force people to login unless there is a really good reason to. Hrm.
2004-09-28, 3:47 PM #55
I say don't force them to login, as you said it can deter some people. If they already don't like us (which is common) then having to make an account gives them enough reason to not bother.

I also assume levels would be checked over by staff before being posted? Like, it'll upload everything, then a file poster just checks OK.

Sweet, nice work! I'm sure we can't thank you enough for devoting your time. Thanks!

The file poster will have an opportunity to look at the description, the screenshots, and the contents of any zip files (I can open them with PHP and iterate through the filenames). The admin can edit something, and then hit approve. When the admin approves of a file, the file gets transferred from the FTP site to a more permanent location, a page gets generated, and the news gets posted.

At least this will help you later in life when you need to point to some java you programmed in a production environment ;)

Any luck, Emon?
