How many of you use artificial sweeteners?

You might want to have a read of the long-term effects of that crap (if you use it):

The following pertain to how dieting and artificial sweeteners generally don't work well.

I used to use them in hot drinks (tea, coffee) after I became diabetic. But then I started drinking tea without any, and recently I gave up coffee, so I don't use them at all now. I had no idea they had any long-term effects, though.

Aspartame turns to formaldehyde at some temperature (86°, I think.) It then turns to formic acid.
Metabolic acidosis, anyone?

Well I have to drink diet sodas and such due to the whole being diabetic thing, and I don't drink coffee or tea, so there's no need for them there, and I've found the best sugar-free hot chocolate in the world. for everthing else I'm like screw it, I'll just dose myself. anyway, I only have artificial sweeteners when drinking soda.

and LividDK27, you're diabetic too? just out of curiosity, are you on an insulin pmump? I just got on one about a month ago

I don't like any label for foods with the word "artificial." Like artificial sweatners, artificial coloring, artificial flavors, and so on. But kinda hard to avoid in today's society.

Try "Splenda." It has the least side effects to it, and is made from actual sugar by some kind of chlorination process. The body won't recognize it as sugar, so it should be fine for a diabetic.

DogSRoOL: I've put splenda in tea (found out belatedly that it's actually sweeter then sugar) but I still don't like anything I would need to put it in...again, the only hot drink I like is hot chocolate and I just use sugar free mix, put the hot water in about 3/4 of the way, then milk, and whipped cream. man, I make awesome sugarfree (well except the milk) hot chocolate :p

Honey is a good sweetener made by the power of bees. It's quite significant in Eastern-style medicine.

I was wondering if sugarless would post here.

I said no to artificial sugar-things, if only so I can say "Gimme some sugah, baby."

No it doesn't. Aspartame is broken down in digestion into aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and some proteins. The methanol is metabolized to formaldehyde, then to formic acid, and then to carbon dioxide and water. The "86 degrees" thing might be someone's bastardization of the fact that aspartame can hydrolyze in soft drinks and other aqueous acids.

Anyway, if you're that concerned about getting methanol poisoning from aspartame, drink a cup of vodka with every diet coke. Problem solved, and you'll be too drunk to post any more chain letters.

sugarless: Yeah, for a few years now. I posted that once in a thread a long time ago, but I guess you don't remember. I'm not on a pump, but it sounds interesting. However the hospital only just got me onto doing stomach injections this year, so...baby steps :o

Maybe it's wise not to become an addict, but my brief search using PubMed didn't actually produce much support for any grievous danger of Aspartame. I didn't even search for that chlorinated sugar DogSRoOL referred to; it surely must be rare here where I live.

I tend to trust more reliable scientific papers than some (random) net sites publishing original content or quotes from some life style magazines or other papers not really qualified on scientific field. There are always lonely knights preaching against all kinds of things, but nowadays this kind of research must be dublicated and studied thoroughly before it's truly relevant.

However, until organisations like FDA (and counterparts in other countries) give new recommendations, it's up to individuals to make their own decisions. That's the price of freedom...

"In digestion" being the key phrase. Store some aspartame in a hot room for a while and let me know how it turns out. ;)

I've noticed that those saying aspartame is harmless tend to provide nothing to back up their claim. They'll make vague statements like "leading scientists/doctors agree that it's harmless," then not tell any names, give any sources, or show any lab results. You might also note that there aren't a lot of studies on the long-term effects of this stuff; only short-term.

lol I hadn't actually done any stomach injections until the first time I connected to the pump, and if I were to go back to injections I probably still wouldn't use my stomach. Everyone was trying to get me to go onto the pump for years before I finally decided I wanted to do it...I guess it kind of took time to adjust to the idea or something
