The single worst tornado outbreak in us history. I wasn't born yet but I live about 5 miles south of where the Louisville twister began.

Anybody else notice that this Tornado alley ( the part thats in the mid west states anyway) also lies on a fault line? We are due for an earthquake too. Damn Indiana weather and Geology...

I find tornadoes incredibly fascinating. Mind you, I wouldn't want to live anywhere near somewhere they are common.

I'm the kind of person who will probably one day be one of the scientists/idiots you see on the Discovery Channel driving towards a tornado, while everyone else is driving away.

They had a thing on tornados in the recent National Geographic, and something on TV too. It's interesting how most of the damage isn't caused by the funnel part that looks so scary, but the indirect winds feeding into it and the debris that it picks up.

We had a tornado here in Cincinnati, Ohio. It passed by us about a quarter-mile away. (That's about 300 meters for you metric folks) I could see it out my window, and I literally saw a tree go flying. We went to see the damage the next day, and it looked like a fingerpainting. All these trees, and there was this big gap where the tornado had simply uprooted and destroyed the trees. It was crazy. It took forever to clean up. I believe I was without electricity for about ... 4 days?

I used to live in Kansas, THE tornado state, and I would see them all the time. Cool stuff. We'd get warnings a lot, but not many actually did damage--it was mostly outside of the city they touched down.

Being a storm chaser would have to be one of the coolest jobs ever! I love storms... rain, lightning, even at school when we're having tornado warnings and everybody is rushing into the halls and away from the windows, I'm always trying to position myself where I get a good view outside [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I think I've told this story before, but I was on a 10 day camping/hiking/canoeing trip in canada once out in the middle of nowhere... like, we started in michigan, crossed the border by canoe, and lived in the wilderness for 10 days. anyway, on like the third day back home we were in the middle of a lake and the winds started picking up, making it hard to paddle straight, so we started to head for the shore to take a break when it started raiding and lightning...ing.. ( [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif] )
so we got to the shore as fast as we could and while our guide and another guy started to tie up a tarp between some trees as a shelter, the rest of us were unloading our gear from the canoes as fast as we could to pull them up on shore, and suddenly I looked up and the whole horizon was green... I swear that was the weirdest thing I have ever seen in my life O_o
haha I was standing there like "wooooaaahhh" and my dad was yelling at me to hurry up and get the canoes on shore so they don't blow away, and then we all sat under the shelter and played cards [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
luckily for us, there were no tornadoes, and the whole storm passed over really quite quickly. I believe we were back out on the water after only like 30 minutes or so...

(woah O_o that's alot of text... and for so early in the morning!)

Tornado history of my state.
1950-1995

There's a lot more than I was aware of... although I never remember going through a summer that didn't have a tornado warning somewhere. Not that many deaths, suprisingly.

I was out in one several years ago while I was a paperboy. Scarry crap.

LOL

Am I the only one who thinks that's kinda funny? I mean Tornadoes are rated on the Fujita scale.... and when rated are said to be F0s, F1s, up through F6s... So F-ers kinda works on 2 different levels...

....Anyone?

Here in New York State, we get a bad storm with tornado warnings maybe once every 3-4 years or so. We have had storms where the sky turns green, it was an awesome sight. When we have ligthing storms in the summer, I like to sit out on our back porch and watch. Until the rains picks up and starts coming in sideways through the screens. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Also, our dog is terrified of storms and lighting. Once he hears the first thunder, he disapeers in a flash and then no one can find him until after the storm passes.

No, it wouldn't. Seriously, once you've seen what a tornado leaves behind, you will never look at weather the same way again. Last year, a tornado literally destroyed an entire town not far from where I live. Think two-story house lifted right off their foundations and turned into rubble in seconds, not to mention the flooding and hail that usually accompanies tornados. Trust me on this one, you do NOT want to screw with tornados.

Oh brother. Look, of course they're devestating, of course there's going to be damage. Sure, it's sad, but I don't see why you should expect me to throw all my fascination out the window over that. Jesus... people don't toss their dreams of becomming a cop because they might have to see a dead body. I'm not saying I would ever want to be a storm chaser, but don't throw THAT, of all things, at me and expect me to take back my statement about it being a cool job.
