I miss the old forums
2004-09-20, 4:26 PM #1
I don't know why, but it just... isn't the same anymore, you know what I mean? :( Sorry if it seems like I'm spitting in the face of everyone who worked on them.
That painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.

I don't see much a difference at all, personally. I rather enjoy the PMing system, and the ability to stay logged in and stuff is nice too. The only real difference I notice is a clutter on the forum pages that there's not enough space in the cells around the words, and it tends to hurt the eyes a bit.

Actually, I share your nostalgia, but also embrace the future, and my big stick should you pervey any more of this vb hating! ;)

I don't miss them in the slightest personally. These are faster, more organised, only login once, private messaging, polls, attachments, custom titles, way way way easier and more powerful admin functions.

If anything these forums renewed my interest, which was somewhat waning.

The topics move down the page and out of sight too quickly. ...

I agree, the front page could be longer, but that's more I think due to renewed interest in the boards! :)

Maybe shrink the font 1 or 2 points?
2004-09-20, 5:03 PM #8
BV if I recall correctly, you were a big advocate for change. Now that the FoJ is gone, looks like you've changed?

Anywho, I love the new forms. The PM system is awesome.

It's the fact it only shows 25 threads... if showed 35 or 40 it might be easier to keep track of threads, but obviously there would be more to load....

It's a minor gripe. I love the rest of the changes :)
2004-09-20, 5:06 PM #10
I have gotten used to it.

Yeah, I was REALLY looking forward to the forums, but now it just seems like something's missing? Meh, I'll probably get used to it.

And no, this has nothing to do with the FoJ... I think everyone was right, it needed to be closed.

Well, it appears I've missed something.... /twitch
can someone explain why the FoJ is gone? :(

on topic i suppose...i actually rather like the new forums. they're sleeker and i've just gotten used to them... /shrug

I really didn't like them at first, but there were alot of things that still needed doing then. With the minor tweaks sorted (mostly), and a little time to grow used to them, I'm perfectly happy now.

I was really worried they'd end up like all the other 45 billion other forums out there, with a ridiculous amount of smilies, animated avatars and various other annoyances that make distinguishing the actual content of a post from the random detritus nigh on impossible. Thankfully, most of it's been removed, and the things that have been left are all good (buttons for adding tags in replies, PMs etc).

The FoJ got closed because a few people made macros to refresh a page over and over again so that one of the thread's page view's would be huge. It sucked up a whole bunch of bandwith and everyone got mad at them.

I do like the PM system, and I can imagine that this system is a lot easier to moderate, especially with the report abuse button.

FoJ is still under discussion.

I changed it to display 40 threads on a forum now.

Its different in a good way, the ease of posting, speed, and looks are great.

I may not be attached to Massassi as some of you are, so I'm not going to cry when a internet website changes its forum system. ;)

I'm quite happy with them. The thing that threw me out a little was that the drop down forum moved from the right-hand side to the left, old habits made me go to the wrong side of the screen. No biggie.

Actually now that I think about it, why can you only logout from the main page or the post-reply page? Is that a design thing a or a limitation of vb? It would be handy to have it on each forum's main page, but if not, I'm sure the extra click or two wont kill me.

[edit] But apparently the biggest problem is that I can't type :(
2004-09-20, 7:23 PM #21
I don't like the new buttons. Especially the ones at the top with the little Star Wars characters. I HATE THEM! I HATE THEM! DIE DIE DIE!

But apart from that I'm good.
2004-09-20, 7:23 PM #22
i miss them too :(

I don't really mind the change. Overall, things look the same, so I could care less about the system running behind it.

My only gripe (that's left) is that (at least in Opera), you have to click in the "your reply" textbox, and the cursor doesn't just default to there. (so you can't just start typing as soon as the reply page comes up)

I don't miss the old forums, they were horribly outdated.

I miss when Word Association would get to like 3500 replies and then everything would be screwed up, and then everybody would be like, "whoa, what is this? I'm on too much acid?"

You're a liar BV :) , graphically these forums are for the most part, indistinguishable from the old ones.

Anyone who took a year or so hiatus and came back would probably only notice the new buttoms as being different.

Asiide from the screen where you type the messages, nothing is really all that different. The added features make up for any visual differences there are.

You can actually use your prefs to turn off that horrible post add form. When you do, you just get two simple boxes, one for subject, one for message. SO MUCH NICER.

I'm fine with the new forums.

However, I'm not fine about the secret forums. If the server is faster, why close down all of them? (In other words, bring SWG Forum back)

And then, many of the old threads weren't imported, and then again the archives are gone.

But otherwise, I'm fine with these forums.
