I'd say there's a good chance that we will all be dead within 50 years.

well, yes, we who frequent this foum may all be dead in 50 years, but human kind wont destroy it self that quickly
Laughing at my spelling herts my feelings. Well laughing is fine actully, but posting about it is not.

While there is certainly a high probability of mass destruction, to completely eliminate human life would be a little more difficult I would believe. Sure, we'd be back in the proverbial Stone Age, and there could be as few as 10,000 people worldwide or the like, but we'd still be here. Bioweapons I would imagine is the closest, strongest threat to a complete end of humanity.

While I think it would be foolish to say "never" I think it will also be over 150 years. We managed to pull through the 20th century, I think we can do it again for at least the 21st.

I estimate sometime between 100-200 years from now.

I voted for "within 150 years". I think we will reach carrying capacity within the next 60 years, which will cause a war. The very few remaining survivors will not be able to depend on technology, which will have been either destroyed beyond functionality or the surviviors will be unfamiliar with its usage. They'll live on for, at the most, a century but will probably be overwhelmed by the changing ecosystems now that humanity is all but gone.

Not soon enough, that's for sure!

Don't give away my grand scheme dangit!

I don't think we'll last forever, but we should be around for a while longer... unless Israel nukes everyone in the name of God.
Seriously, I have friends that are afraid of Israel because they can do it, and they would do it. (no offense intended to any Israelis (sp?) here, but Israel needs to calm down, as does Palestine, and make peace -- this is getting to be rediculous).

I'll shut up now.

Please do. The Israelis have made it fairly clear that such weapons would only be used as the ultimate defense. They don't have the strike capability nor the will to nuke "everybody," if anything, it'd be a few neighboring nations who have had a past of invading their land. If you have to worry about a single nation destroying the world in the name of some god, look towards the U.S.

I don't think we're going to kill ourselves, I think some freak incident will finish us off.

........ Simply amazing. For starters, there is no sizable offshoot of Judaism that supports holy wars. Second of all, what Roach said about their attack capabilities anyways. Third, Iran has openly declared that the second they get nuclear capabilities, they plan on launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike on Tel Aviv. Israel is surrounded on all sides by governments which have made public statements supporting the complete irradication of the jewish people - Forgive them for being a little jumpy.

As for humanity wiping itself out, I can't see it happening at all. Life in a post-nuclear world wouldn't be fun, but it'd be survivable for sure. Egypt might catch a few warheads, but the rest of Africa would be untouched. South America would be untouched. There would definitely be world-wide fallout, but not so much as to completely irradicate human life. Complete destruction of our race would require complete, quick, violent destruction of the entire planet. We couldn't dream of that kind of power.

You wouldn't believe how many times I've had this retarded discussion. The last time was with Flexor, I think, and he took the position of someone who reads too many crappy books and not enough good books.

Needless to say I'm with Slug.
2004-09-21, 2:22 PM #27
To Roach and Slug, I'm just going to briefly mention some stuff.
The news station (Channel One News) my school is forcing us to watch has only portrayed Israel and Palestine as violent, bitter, and doing it mainly in the name of religion and kicking the other guys out 'cause they were there first and it was their Holy/Promised Land. And they said absolutely nothing about the other countries' views/policies, just that they were also gaining nuclear capabilities (Israel already has it, and everyone is uneasy about that).

Why do I bother watching (and for that matter giving a @#$% about) this station? Who knows... even my mom would rather I don't watch that particular program.

Oh, I also leave the circumstances under which humanity might fall open -- there's so many possibilities to the end...
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

I agree with Slug except for one point. I thought it was fairly well-known that the United States and the U.S.S.R. had enough power to instantaneously destroy the world 50 times over during the height of the Cold War.

Yes. But why on earth would either country send a nuke to Venezuela, ya know? Certain areas of the earth would be completely obliterated, and fallout would carry across the world in the atmosphere, but I have to imagine remote areas would still be survivable.

Eccept the whole 'blocking out the clouds' or the whole 'plagues and illnesses.' Blowing up a portion of the entire planet is obviously going to have some sort of effect on the rest of the world.

If humans didn't have a more-than-significant will to survive, we wouldn't have come this far.

I don't think we'll ever die by our own hands, but that's just my opinion.

Here's an interesting subject for discussion. Instead of thinking about the complete destruction of every human being, what about the destruction of civilization? What percentage of the population would have to die before civilization would be fatally disrupted? What would it take to achieve such a disruption, and how probable is it?
