I'll download it, and then still use firefox.

I still use both IE and Firefox... Most of my computer usage is at a university terminal that's been largely stripped down... As a result, they're equipped with nothing else aside from IE and MS Office.... But When I can, I'll take anything aside from IE (IE 7.0 might have a slight chance at modifying that slightly). I'll take Opera over IE, Netscape over Opera (though Netscape is rapidly becoming obsolete), and Firefox over Netscape.

I'd stick with Firefox, but standards-compliant IE would be awesome.

I voted for the second option, but I replaced 'decent' with 'better' in my mind.
2004-09-23, 2:52 PM #11
Why only Firefox? I will stay with Opera since it has the email thing that I like most. =) But still I will wait till the release of the new IE7 - tough I don't have many hopes. Perhaps secure and comfortable, perhaps spyware, perhpas who knows

I'll upgrade, and only use it to test IE compatibility with my pages/go to ActiveX required sites (which suck).

Firefox for me. :)

If or when IE7 is released, it would be Longhorn-only and non-standalone. And since Longhorn wont run on any current computer, that means youll have to upgrade your hardware. So, in order to run IE7, youll have to dish out for new hardware and a new OS.

Ill take *nix and gecko/khtml anyday, which still runs reasonably well on a 486, and will continue to do so for many years to come.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

I'll get it and try it... if I like it I'll use it, if I don't I'll stick with what I have.

I don't believe it is coming out at all... for my platform. So what choice do I have? ;)

I didn't vote because I fell into none of the catagories. I believe that MS may make a decent browser, but that doesn't mean I'm going to use it. (See above)

He's talking about the DRM stuff, and the Pallidium chip stuff. (It's not called Pallidium anymore, but I forget it's new name. I saw a /. story on the name change, Microsofts reason for the change? Too much bad press. :p)

Longhorn will run better on older machines than XP currently does. Much better use of system resorcess.

"If Microsoft had counted on this week's WinHEC hardware conference to raise enthusiasm for the next release on Windows, then the event can certainly be judged a success. The build that found its way into developers' hands isn't the leviathan some feared: it purrs along happily with 512MB and a modest 16MB graphics card, although a 64MB card will be needed to take full advantage of the new compositor."

Whoever said a standards compliant IE would be great is crazy. They are going to make as much great and extra crap as they can to make sure we use that browser because of its advantages.

Forget about it!

IE7? Oh no... it's the rise of the machines... Already IE6 has self-preservation instincts; could IE7 be fully self-aware?

Somehow I doubt it will be that serrious. When Internet Explore Seven comes out I plan to download it and use it for sites that don't support Firefox. But overall I'll keep Firefox as my default browser.

Just thought I'd point out that I have WinXP Pro running on a 500Mhz Machine with 96 MB Ram. Now. There isn't a hellova lot that'll run on a machine like that anymore, but Windows runs perfectly fine. It's smooth enough. I've of course turned all of the pointless GUI crap off, but even with it on it still ran fairly well. I've never had any major noticable slowdowns.

I'm just saying. In no way am I standing up for XP.

Oh, and FireFox all the way. I'm never moving back to IE.

You guys seem to be missing something...there will be no IE7 for XP, and it wont be available as a separate download. In order to get it, youll have to install Longhorn.

Who says I won't have the new Windows when I download it. :)

I hope you have fun with your new OS, after you get it, because chances are, within a week, it'll become the most insecure OS on the planet. Again.

By that time, I hope to be using Windows only for gaming an doing PC related tasks. I should have an iMac by that time for everything else. OS X is far safer than any version of Windows.

How about we wait until Longhorn and IE7 are released before deciding that they're rubbish?

Just a thought.
