This is a great site with pictures of how it looks today after 20-some-odd years.

http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/chapter1.html

It's amazing that you're safe as long as you stay on the roads, b/c radiation won't stay on asphalt but sticks to everything else.

The english isn't perfect, but it is quite understandable, and this site uses euro number formatting (e.g. 6.000 = 6,000 , not 6. )

Usually, on this part of road a beeping of dosimeter inspires me to switch couple of gears up and get through the area with great haste. The place in front of me is called red - or 'magic" wood. In 1986, this wood glowed red with radiation. They cut it down and buried it under 1 meter of earth. The Dosimeter readings on the asphalt paving is 500 -3000 microroengens, depending upon where you stand. That is 50 to 300 times the normal radiation of a normal environment. If I step 10 meters forward, dosimeter will run out of scale. If I walk a few hundred meters towards the reactor, the radiation is 3 roengens per hour - which is 300,000 times normal. If I was to keep walking all the way to reactor, I would glow in the dark tonight. Maybe this is why they call it a magic wood. It is dark magic that turns biker leather into shining armour.

red glowing radioactive wood... astounding.

Cool site, and this woman is funny

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">It was quite boring to participate in an election with one candidate from one party, so the turnout was very low. That is until the local officials hit upon the idea of offering free drinks in return for a vote. This inspired the electorate to become very interested in politics.</font>

We could learn from them!

[edit..]

...like, really funny

I don't know if authorities came up with idea of making the day after the elections a holiday so the voters had time to sober up before returning to work. Old man who told me this story could not recall it either.</font>

There's a screenshot almost exactly like that on the STALKER site. Go figure [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

That's one thing I actually wanted to do, visit the ghost town. Unfortunately, it would be near impossible to obtain a permit from the local authorities.

Wow. That is crazy. I'm still trying to find a copy of this picture I saw once of the ghost-town with only a few ravens perched on a soviet monument present.

It looks like a real-world Fallout. I guess that's what the world'd be like - a barren, empty wasteland.

Kinda makes you feel sad... although it does make you think whether the Glow is after the last checkpoint.

First of all, she's kinda cute. Anybody have her phone number? Sorry, I'm kinda lonely right now.

Second, I do like her sense of humor. Just the fact that she includes great taste in shoes in her friend's description I found really funny.

Third, it always astounds me how stupid the Soviet government could be and how little regard they had for their people.

Fourth, great pictures.
