If they are not being kept alive by extraordinary means (ie by machines, as opposed to simply supplying them with food and oxygen) then yes, to kill them off would be doing exactly that, and i for one think it would be wrong.

Why?

There is an ethical difference between allowing someone who is going to die to die, and causing the person's death.

As a human being, he or she is entitled to basic medical care, no matter what you think his or her chances of survival, and no one has the right to define a life as "not worth living." It's just lovely when people decide that a mentally handicapped person just hates living, for them.

If extraordinary means might help the person, then that is a decision to make for the family or legal guardian whether it is best to let things run their course, or to attempt to keep them alive.

Extra-ordinary means include things such as resuscitation, expensive, or risky medical procedures, etc.

It is never ethical to cause a death, or deny help when that help is readily available.

Yeah, what he said.

Also, there is the fact that these folks have not ASKED to die. Do you really want a society where people pass judgments like that on others - where someone can just have someone else killed like that?

As someone pointed out above, situations like that usually involve a lot of projecting: "I would hate to be like them, therefore, they should die now".

Hmmm... not well phrased at all, but u get the point.
