painkiller demo error message
2004-04-04, 2:22 PM #1
When I downloaded the painkiller demo and went to play it (after hearing how good it was) I got the following error:

"error-could not initialize videodevice: P*0"

Any idea what this means?

i'm willing to bet that it has something to do with my video card, b/c my computer meets or exceeds the requirements in all other aspects.

BTW, I have no idea what kind of video card my comp has. The manual wouldn't say, and it wasn't listed in winxp device manager, either. The manual only covers the stuff that a complete idiot would get stuck on (such as how to turn the computer on, what the mouse is for, etc.) but gives you absolutely nothing on the hardware component models and manufacturers.

I'd say new drivers first

there's my problem. I don't even know what kind of drivers that I have (or what kind of card, for that matter), and if I install the wrong ones, I could be in for a world of hurt. If i crack the case to check what's written on the card, I'll void the warranty.

Granted, i probably can fix all windows-related problems myself without sending it back the shop, but I prefer to preserve the warranty in case I run across something that i can't fix. There's a little sticker on the back that will show if the case has been tampered with. I could probably get it off w/o ripping it, but it still wouldn't look the same as before.

I already upgraded my directX to the latest version, but it didn't help any.

b/c JO and other 3d-card requiring games work fine.

Go to the run program and type in dxdiag and it'll give you your comps specs. Go to display tab and thats where it tells me my 3D card.

Okay, i obtained newer drivers, installed, rebooted, but the problem didn't go away.

Does painkiller only work on specific brand big name video cards like ATI or Nvidia?

You're using your motherboard onboard graphics, no doubt it isn't fast enough. Go out and buy a card.

That's what I was talking about. I know he has to have something, but I thought he might just be using the onboard graphics processor. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Sorry PW, it's not happenin. Painkiller gives fairly decent comps a run for their money, and then some. Nice try though :P

his problem is if he buys a new one he CANNOT put it in without voiding his warranty... and what if he buys an AGP card and finds out he has no AGP slot...

anyway the only hope you will ever have of running painkiller is a new video card... provided that the rest of your computer doesn't suck... though it does run semi playble on my computer

my comp specs:

2.1 GHZ athlon
512 mb ram
160 gb hd
8x dvd+rw drive
48x CD-rom drive

that is more than adequate to run mosty newer games. I only got the computer at the beginning of feb. 2004.

no ... it's not more than adequate...

your video card is holding you back...

my mom's laptop is the same way

like we said you are going to need a new video card but you need to open your case just to know what kind of slots you have available

yeah, I know. After some fighting with windows xp and the hardware, they turned out to be decent machines, but I'd take a custom-built comp any day.
