I know some people who love this "cafa" and people who don't. Some people like the "unique" assortment of drinks while others think there is too much in "style" and not enough in content. Some like the selection while others are put off with the prices. Anyway, what do you think of this place? And, how many are there around where you live?

I have 3 Starbucks in my town. Not many other coffee places I can go to (excluding Dunkin' Donuts). Personally, I think its fine. The size often is alright (even when the "tall" is quite small) but a bit pricy for the amount of drink. And I'm not often bothered by their "sense of sytle" in the room and on their products. *shrug*

Blech, Starbucks has a plethora of problems.

First, they drag business from the good little coffee shops. The ones where I can go and smoke cigarettes and watch my friends play (RIP Shelter House). Second, their coffee tastes either nasty and watered down or sickeningly sweet. Third, their coffee has a **** load of additives and preservitives. Fourth, and most importantly, they don't use very much Fair Trade coffee.

I don't like Starbucks.

There used to be a nice little independant coffee shop near campus hat was open from 6am-2am and had nice atmosphere, prices, etc. There was halfway decent art on the walls and you could smoke indoors while sitting in a pew they got from a church-turned-nightclub. Starbucks opened across the street from them, a few doors down. Then Starbucks opened again a block behind them. The independant obviously couldn't keep up with this and ran out of business. Shortly after that, the second Starbucks closed. I'm sure it was totally unrelated.

I drink coffee every day. I've traveled the country and drank espresso in all kinds of horrible cafes, diners and dives. I've gotten sick from it only twice: once at Starbucks, again from this little umbrella stand vendor in San Francisco.

They aren't clever. They don't have "style." Whatever atmosphere or appeal they have has been carefully calculated and synthesized in some office building somewhere and has nothing to do with the actual cafe "scene." As with all popular trends, it's a shoddy, cheap replica of the authentic item that's been bastardized. It sells. You will go there on your vespa and you will order an americano, never knowing the name "americano" is a european mockery of america's watered down coffee. You will sit behind a green fence and look cool. A homeless teen with a skateboard strapped to their backpack will pass by and dig through the garbage. You will wrinkle your nose.

I think that... I'm too angry to be posting right now. Not just about coffee of course, it's been a long day.

I don't believe I have ever actually been in a Starbucks before.

Although I love the scene in Shrek 2 when Mongo attacks the "Farbucks" and all the people inside run to the one that's right across the street.

I, personally, would like to sneak into all 17 starbucks in my neighborhood district at midnight and plant small amounts of motion-detecting shrapnel C4 on all the glass outside doors, so that when the employees came to work the next morning, they open the doors and BAM!!!........they're pumped with glass and metal. And thus, they learn their lesson: take over my dad's business, and you got another thing coming.

Nah, just kidding about all that. But I am extremely pissed that Starbucks is conquering the coffee businesses in my city. Seriously, there's one at EVERY intersection. Ugh...

I only drink tea.. and their tea selection is abysmal, and even if they had any tea, Im pretty sure it wouldnt be very good.

"From the time in which man first gazed at the heavens until now, the belief has been that the End of the Universe exists out in space. Seems logical. It doesn't. It's here in the United States. And oddly enough, it's in Houston, Texas. I know, I was surprised, too.

There's a comedy club there called The Laugh Stop. And if you walk to the end of the block, there sits a Starbucks. And directly across the street, in the exact same building as that Starbucks, there is...another Starbucks. There is a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks. And ladies and gentlemen, that is the end of the Universe.

People have asked me, 'How do you know this?' Well, go there. Stand between those two Starbucks. And when you look at your watch, time stands still. And what's truly amazing: if you turn, and look just at one Starbucks, immediately you think, 'You know, when I turn around, there can't possibly be a Starbucks behind me. If there is a just and loving God, how could He allow that to happen?' So you turn slowly, thinking maybe there's a McDonald's there, or possibly an Exxon station, or maybe a Gap...but there's another Starbucks!

Many people have asked, 'Are there too many Starbucks?' Well now we know. Yes. When you build a Starbucks across from a Starbucks, the game is over. You can build no more.

I wonder, who are the people that would need a Starbucks across from a Starbucks? What demographic could this possibly be? I've thought about it long and hard and I mean no harm by this, but it must be a community filled with people with Alzheimer's. Who else could it be? Someone who's sitting there, drinking a cup of coffee...finishes it and walks to the door...'Oh, look, a Starbucks.'

You know, I think it's time I had a cup of coffee."

Yes im starting to think that there are to many starbucks and not enough quality now. This one starbucks used to be quite nice but recently the management has been quite crappy and it has started to annoy me when i go in there and it takes forever. Plus their idea of 'washing' the blenders is leaving them sitting under a faucet that runs the whole time.

Yea its lost a lot of quality.

I work there and it sucks. I mean, I get paid, but I have to deal with people that think Starbucks is God on Earth and that's annoying. I dont care what your favorite drink is or if you think you're cool because you can say it. Unless you're tipping me, I dont give a rat's *** about you. Starbucks caused my favorite coffeeshops to close and you just gotta accept that. The coffee is decent, the espresso drinks could be better, and most of the people that work there just work there because they get paid.

Also... I forgot who posted that Starbucks doesnt use enough fair trade blends or something... ya YOU are wrong and need to do your research. Check out Oxfam's Make Trade Fair site. Starbucks is one of the few companies congratulated for doing their part in helping out poor growers.

Haha, and Starbucks is increasing their prices on October 7th. Because milk and ice (which is what 90% of your drinks are) are sooooo expensive... whatever, it's cause they're greedy bastages. but I get paid.

Not a single Star Bucks anywhere around me.

I don't understand the fasination with it.
2004-09-29, 12:32 AM #21
I have never drank coffee there, but in the two I were in NY it smelled really bad, like in a WC.

But we only buy biological, fair-trade coffee beans without anything added. I used to hate coffee, but with this Swiss "Jura"-coffee machine and this coffee I like it. :) Tough the espresso it makes is too strong for me.

And if I am somewhere with friends and we want to drink a coffee or an espresso we usually go in a "real" cafeteria, it's just better quality and usually cheaper than in a starbucks (at least that's what my friends say)

Starbucks stole my Friendly's!

That's right, and they stole my other Friendly's in the next town over as well!

I used to walk to that Friendly's, only a block away and enjou a frappe or perhaps even a sundae.... but now I have to drink coffee!!! And there's a Dunkin' Donuts two doors down. Now there is not one Ice Cream place on Mount Auburn street whatsoever! Unless you count the softserve place, but thats in east Watertown, and I'm certainly not going to drive anyplace for ice cream! There used to be a place in the square, but that one was trendy and too expensive, and is now closed. I WANT MY FRIENDLY'S BACK! DAMN YOU, STARBUCKS! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!

Oh... btw.. I'm back, what's up.

I dont like starbucks.

They are EVERYWHERE. And yes, their coffee is watered down judging by the taste. I like drinking my coffee black, so that really bothers me.
2004-09-29, 10:38 AM #24
Never been to StarBucks for coffee yet but there is only one in my area. Hopefully though, they don't close down one of my favorite coffee shops a couple towns away from here.
No sig.

My apologies, I didn't realize Starbucks had taken such a role. But still, 70% of the coffee they buy isn't Fair Trade. THe one's in my city, you have to specially request a pot to be brewed. They don't do enough to advertise what Fair Trade is.

All admit.. they have good drinks.
But so do alot of other places, in larger amounts, for cheaper prices.
Unfortuantly, these places are rare.

Starbucks, if they lowered their prices, would be alot better. They try to be classy and stuff, but they are not.

There is a Starbucks here in the third floor of our new library. They provide much needed caffinated goodness to get through the morning hours which I cannot do at all.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I can think of six within 20 miles of my house, with ease.

I loathe them. Then again, I'm anti-caffine.. so my opinion is a wee bit biased.

I agree with you there. The Fair Trade blend that they sell/brew though is sexaliciously good.

Nothing beats Hardies' coffee. Nothing.

I like my coffee black, and VERY few places know how to brew a good black cup of coffee. That place is Hardies.

There are at least two other chains here: Seattle's Best and Diedrich's (sp?). I've never had SB but a friend of mine used to work at D's five years or so ago so I had a couple back then.

D's was pretty weird in their employee training. They showed my friend this long video about how "grandma diedrich" invented this special breed of espresso bean almost 100 years ago, which has now been lost but because of that endeavor we all owe her a great debt, so the employees must be both respectful and loyal to this legacy. So... yeah, chains have more than one problem.
