Am I the only one who finds this immature? Does anyone actually think that a company as large as Microsoft is going to be affected by a bunch of brainless kids on the internet? Even if the cost of this mishap was over a million dollars, it's still pocket change to Microsoft (however i'm willing to bet the "damage" done by this does not exceed $3000, if that). Plus, no matter how much "damage" these kids caused them, I'm sure they've more than made up for it with all the times they've (over)paid for MS products. Want to make a dent in their earnings? Start using a real Operating System and a real Office Suite .

First off, I completely disagree with what they are promoting with this thread, however, Microsoft has been, time and again, affected by brainless kids. Kids have written viruses that have caused billions of dollars worth of "damages" (which really means they had to pay people to reinstall windows and all the patches and put in firewalls and such). So yeah, MS can be affected by punk kids.

I dont think Otterbine was over reacting at all. He had some valid points in his post, and yes, he is entitled to his own opinion.

But if they are smart enough to write those viruses, are they really "brainless?" There is a difference between your average internet user who tries to rip off M$ by ordering 150 cds and the hacker who really knows what they are doing.

I agree with Otterbine.

And I don't see how the consensus is that this will have an effect, after seeing the boycott for equality thread.

Your entitled to your opinion yes, and I'm entitled to tell you to screw off if I don't like it.
You can call my behavior immature, and perhaps it is, I just don't take crap from people. Joking, in it's sense, throws out all maturity out the window. This was one, and you calling it immature is stupid. And yes, I'm prooving your point with this post. But oh well.

I didn't mean for it to be taken seriously.
Perhaps a different approach on your side could have been taken to make your points.

I don't jump on the bandwagon and go along hating things or liking them because other people do. I like windows. I like Word, its the best word processor out there IMO. I like alot of Microsoft products. This by no means was a throwdown to Microsoft.
And if it was, as you said, it would be pointless.. they are too powerful.
2004-09-29, 12:57 PM #20
I agree, Brian. Working in IT for a major pharmaceutical I can attest to the mayhem that can be caused by script kiddies. I was actually specifically reffering to this particular situation and those that are like it.

Edit: SK, I didn't mean to "give you crap". A company is offering something for free, and you decided you would take advantage of this in a way that I see as being very juvinile. Perhaps, in light of your exploits, Microsoft will begin charging for these update CDs next time preventing those who legitamately need an upgrade from getting one for free. I see this as an example of how immature behavior can result in the loss of a good thing. I'm not saying that MS will discontinue their update CDs, I'm just saying that this is the type of stuff thats going to do it.

You seem to admit that you had absolutely no point in doing this. If so, then why go through the trouble of doing it. Is your house in DIRE need of coasters?

Squirrel King, please don't be so defensive. I didn't mean to attack you personally or anything.
I figured you weren't entirely serious, but I chose to respond to it seriously because I wasn't sure and to reinforce that it's a stupid idea in case someone does take it seriously.
I was wrong about your intent, and I apologize.

Bill Gate could afford to send everyone in the United States 85 copies, and still have $250 million left over.

But if Microsoft went broke, that would mean a lot of people would lose their jobs... :(
The answer is maybe.

So writing virus' by kids is a bad thing, well allow me to out this into context,

Microsoft, stop writing crap software that can get infected by 25 new virus' buy day.

Windows users, you always complain.

I downloaded Service Pack 2, awhile ago and I immediately uninstalled it. Service Pack 2 totally screwed up my PC, the start up became very slow, the task bar was messed up, and I had no sound at all.
2004-09-29, 5:32 PM #30
Cloud.. yea stupid task bar! I have that damn sheild having those pop up bubbles comme up once in a while. Any way to turn it off? It seems like its completely random.

I see that :D - My status says it all!

And yeah, from what I've heard about SP2, I'm staying the hell away from it. And as far as the MS virus thing is concerned, there never has been, and never will be a virus-proof OS. people will keep finding exploits and... well, exploiting them. Linux, Mac, and the like are no less suseptible to virus attacks than Windows. Just most of the world is still using Windows and therefor most of the virus writers out there write for MS. If virus writers shifted their efforts elseware I think we'd see just how much more "secure" OSS is....

Eh...I think it's both the fact that MS made a botched and susceptible kernel AND that lots of people use MS rather than *nix. In theory, *nix should be harder to write a virus for..much harder. But not impossible. MS's way of writing their system makes it more vulnerable to attacks.

I agree, I'm only pointing out that where there's a will there's a way. If the whole world suddenly switched to linux the virus writers would adapt. Trying to make a truely virus-proof OS is like trying to make a truely bullet-proof vest - when the traditional bullets don't penetrate it, they'll just come up with new ones that will. And one thing that I think I failed to address in my earlier post is the speed and efficiency at which OSS developers close the holes in their software. With MS we have to wait for a patch and even then it may not work. With OSS we have a living breathing community of developers who can pretty much stay ahead of threats.
