IBM now has the fastest supercomputer in the world

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99996461

If I remember correctly, 36 teraflops is comparable to the speed of the human brain.

It seems like computers are already faster than the human brain.

Or maybe just faster than mine.
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

I can only imagine what they could do with this technology... or wait, I can't because I can't process it fast enough... dammit.

Yeah, in pure number crunching, sure.

But the human mind still holds king. We handle input from our five senses at the same time, process it, and form opinions on what we observe, near-instantaneously. Something our personal computers could only dream of doing (that is... if they COULD dream.)

But can it play HL2?

That's not an issue. HL2 is never coming out.

Yeah. Some time ago they said the most sophisticated AI was about as intelligent as a fly. I wonder if they have gotten any better since that...

The human brain doesn't even COMPARE to that of octipus that can change the colour and texture of their skin to that of their surroundings instantly. Think about that... The octipus must control its entire skin to become invisible.

Riiiight, considering PC Gamer rated it 96%.

And, computers only process things one at a time and not simultaneously. I think the brain does do things at the same time.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

Which is triggered through reactions similar to our goosebumps and blushing. The human brain is more complex and densely connected than those of cephalopods.

Also you must remember that the brains of different organisms allot the available "processing power" or "CPU time" in vastly different manners. The fact that some creatures have a better hearing than humans is not only due to the structure of the ear but because those animals use a greater portion of their brains to analyze what they are picking out. Humans use a huge amount of their brain capacity for cognitive processes (we need those to understand this forum... Especially this forum), and thus many senses are somewhat compromised.

It would definetly need to be complex, it would have to understand and recreate what it wants its skin to change to. If thats not the case, how can it change its skin to look EXACTLY like waving seaweed or nearly anything along the bottom of the ocean floor. Without doing some very interesting things in the brain.

The complexity required to camoflage its skin is orders of magnitude less than what is required for conscious thought. I mean, sure its camoflaging itself, but is it really doing anything more than displaying a glorified screensaver? A good test of the intelligence needed for a task is to ask yourself: could a computer do it? If a computer could do it, it is generally not a task that requires intelligence (unless it is solving a math problem, or playing chess; I'm talking about situations in the real world such as 3d processing of your surroundings, or reacting to some event, that need real-time processing of multiple wideband data streams)

I don't remember saying it wasn't complex, just that their brain isn't as complex as that of a human.
