Just add your email to the list, and you'll get an invite emailed to you shortly. The turn-over of invites is really high, as the site has gotten very popular.

Gmail doesn't have large advetising banner, SPAM, or an advertisment statement at the bottom of every email. Although, you can't do bold, italics, etc yet. I also have invites, email me if you want an account.

It's got a gig of storage, the spam system is quite good, it's 'conversations' system is awesome, and not to mention...it's from google.
