Massassi vs. Intelligence
2004-10-01, 1:19 AM #1
I actually started thinking about this while writing a reply in the 'poll on objective reality thread'.

Do you think the average Massassi member is slightly above average IQ? Not even that much, ony a few points or so. I'm not saying this to induce some sort of superior thinking onto you guys, it's just something I think needs genuine wondering.

The reason I think that, is this:

Reason one, there seems to be no real religious fanaticism or reactionism around, meaning most guys didn't seriously reply to the thread I mentioned above. Like they couldn't take it very seriously. I think this is a very positive phenomenon, since noone here actually ever considered earth is 6000 years old or man walked alongside dinosaurs. It wasn't worth their brain processing power; they KNEW how the real world works, it was evident.

And guys will read the above and think what's the point he's trying to make... EVERYONE know all those claims are BS. We're not above average IQ. However, I don't think that's right. The few forums I visit nowadays show a STUNNING amount of guys who do consider the claims to be true. Like 20% of all forumgoers. Also, those forums don't even have to do anything with religion or something (although one does). Just forums on the classes I'm taking at UNI and that go deeper into materials.

Reason two, the very subject of these boards. The essence of this board is a game called Jedi Knight, a game dating from 1996 I think. I agree that most editing nowadays might be for the new generation of games, but the very reason these boards and even this site survived this long is Jedi Knight. Jedi Knight I. If it wasn't, most would've long moved to bigger, official forums.

Now why do I bring this up?

I think most guys go through and through with JKI and these forums is because of a romantic sense, a romantic sense I ALWAYS associate with intelligence.

Guys play an 8 year old game. They edit it, they code it, refine it, tweak it, map it, skin it, and play play play. They indulge themselves into a heroic world, a world they associate with them growing up, since I think most guys here were at a very influencable age when JKI got released. Even so much that it has become part of their persona. And even 8 years later, they go back to that game.

That's romanticism: a strange longing for the past in contrast with the present. You'll find a lot less of these over at the new kickass upcoming game's forums. And again, I ALWAYS associate romanticism with intelligence. Most intellectuals I know (of) are romantics. It's a quality often associated with critical thinking, creativity, even emotionality, ... Those are know qualities I associate with a large part of Massassi members.

Anyway, time to let it go. Any thoughts?

The amount of intelligence at Massassi always suprises me, but sometimes it's a good suprise and sometimes it's bad...
2004-10-01, 5:18 AM #7
The ammount of idiocy on massassi suprises me, and yet, I would have to agree that most massassians are still above the average. This isn't a compliment to massassians, it's an argument against everybody else.

The attention of grammar is quite nice here. I've seen some forums screwed over with bad wording and spelling.

Your IQ score takes your age into consideration. This means that you shouldn't have a different IQ at 15 than you will when you're 25, or 40.

But IQs aren't that reliable anyways. They're far too vague, and they also depend alot on how you are when you're taking the test (tired, hungry, awake, energetic...) I've taken a bunch of tests throughout my life and I've gotten results stretching between 145 and 165. That's way too vague to mean anything.

Not to mention they rely far too much on mathematical skills and logic, completely disregarding all other forms of intelligence. (artistic, physical, etc.)

On the internet everybody has an IQ significantly higher than would seem statistically possible.

I blame liars and online IQ tests, collectively.

In my dealings with the InterWeb, I've found Massassi to be a generally more friendly and sociable forum than most. Ther forums seem to be filled with morons and this has been the only forum that I've been able to exist in. Not to mention I like Jedi Knight, which led me here in the first place.

:/ Your telling me that religion is a mark of lower intelligence and mere small-minded superstition?

Romanticism is most often associated with intellegence because our modern age seems to commonly be one of disdain for intellect, as opposed to previous times of reverence for learning. Thus, people with a similar reverence are throwbacks to this time.

My IQ is 126 which is "borderline genius." However, my verbal comprehension skills are marked at 148 which is suppose to be higher than 99% of people my age. o_O

Best I can say, is that I'm much smarter than most of the students in my high school, and random people I see when out and about.

Tenshu:

I'm a little tired, and I've had somewhat of a long week. However, to say the least, your post had a significant emotional impact on me, mainly because you are talking about a tender subject. I am not sure if you "right" or "wrong" (or even if there is a clear answer). The bottom line being, when people talk this way about Massassi and Jedi Knight I get very nostalgic.

As of late I have been intensely focused on school, and I have been having internal and external debates about the nature of my brain, stereotypes and conformity, and my future. I am cautious to make a concrete statement here, and I apologize for my lack of direction. I will meditate on the subject more tonight; I am somewhat emotional right now.

I believe there is something to be said about the community and our strength as a group, in addition to our dedication to a single concept. The fact that many of us are still here says something about our focus.

I like to think that I'm not more "intelligent" than people, but rather, more aware about who I am, what my potential is, and how to exploit it.
2004-10-02, 12:37 AM #39
There is no way to measure intelligence. The only thing IQ tests excel at is labelling people as "genius" and "dumbass". To think it actually measures the inteligence of a human being is not only naive, but arrogant. I personally think no one is any "smarter" than anyone else, at least potentially. I believe in the "use it or lose it" philosophy, but I don't believe that one person has any less potential "intellignece" than another person.
