So I took a plunge last night and installed netscape and I don't get it... why does everyone hate it?

It's better than IE. But it's now owned by AOL and once they get their grubby paws on it, said product drops in quality 3 fold. Be prepared for the onslaught of the Linux/OSS users here to point you towards Mozilla's site.

I actually switched over to Mozilla its the same thing but instead of taking up 34 k of memory it only takes up 19.
