Um.... to put it bluntly, nein.

The Catholic Church (for the western half of the Roman Empire at least) was the power until Martin Luther and then Henry VIII started everything. The destruction of the Spanish Armada in the late 16th century marked the beginning of the British Empire, IMO.

But ya, there was definitely about a thousand year gap between the fall of the Romans and the beginning of British Imperial Power.

Like I said, the Roman Catholic Church and the Byzantines were in the same period, then the Holy Roman Empire, and then the Renaissance happened and everything went to ****.

Roman Empire desolved in 410 with the sacking of Rome.

1066 England is finally unified(relatively), though Scotland is still contested and there will be many wars afterwards about who exactly should rule England, both sparked from inside the country and from outside.

In 1588 the Spanish Armada is destroyed by the British fleet. This sets Britain as the world power, as Spain was before them.

The British Empire and British dominance started during the Renassiance.

The Roman Empire was around until roughly 1200 AD. But I'm not saying that the British were a world power--just that they were responsible for holding us back quite a lot.

Augustulus Romulus, the last Roman emperor, was overthrown in 476 AD. The Romans didn't make it to 1200.
Life is beautiful.

The Roman Empire was no more after the Visigoths sacked Rome. The already fractionalized Roman Empire completely split after that incident, the west splitting further into areas like Burgundy and Normandy. And The Holy Roman Empire(which is what I assume you are referring to) was a different entity(which lasted from 421 to 1806). The Emperor(usually of the german people) was appointed by the Pope, hence the term "Holy Roman", which Rome was the Pope's seat of power. Some Emperors had dreams of re-establishing a Roman Empire, but that never happened in large part due to the Popes.

The British were nothing in the grand scheme of Europe and the world until the Spanish Armada was destroyed. This gave them control of the trade lanes, which if you controlled trade back then, you were the supreme power. Trade was everything.

He could also be referring to the Byzantine Empire, which was around until the mid 15th century. Modern historians differentiate between the eastern and western empires, but the Byzantines simply considered themselves to be Romans.

yeah romes empire was way more technologically advanced with even running water to homes and a better understanding of science. Then along comes britain and they literally do take many many steps backwards.

Uhh, what? At least a thousand years separated Rome and anything approaching the British Empire; closer to 1500 years, really.

The Dark Ages happened after Rome fell, and had nothing to do with Britain.

What? No it didn't. England wasn't even a united country when Rome fell, and wouldn't be for half a millennium.

Rome fell about 500AD.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Holy Roman Empire, aka, Germany, during the Middle Ages?
