it will be most useful if you pre-order it through steam. Then you'll be able to play it as soon as it's released. Preloading basically downlaods all the data to your hard drive.

Well, if you preload HL2 and purchase it over steam, you only need to input a CD Key and you are set. However, you dont get the game on CD or anything.

I've heard that if you preload and then purchase HL2 boxed, you need only to input the CD key and then the game will install from your hard drive instead of the 6 disks HL2 will be on.

6 disks!? I hope they release a DVD-ROM version of the game.

Also, if you purchase the game through Steam, you can get more stuff than if you buy through retail.

Yeah. Blame Vivendi for the sucky retail packages. Here's hoping the Gold package isn't insanely expensive.
Moo.

Nope. I dont think Vivendi will let them.

I'll probably end up getting the Collector's Edition only because I want HL: Source. And it's on a DVD.
I have a signature.

You'd have to be hardcore for that gold package.
Mmmm.
2004-10-05, 1:38 PM #9
I wonder what crap the ATi-HL2 bundle voucher-holders will be getting. :/
2004-10-05, 2:12 PM #10
MB, the Steam packages are already confirmed.

And as for the ATI voucher holders, they get the steam Silver package (but with an option to upgrade to Gold for some extra money)
Moo.

That was in response to the question about DVDs.

ATi people get the bronze package.

Over my dead body will I buy the game through steam. Seeing that I can't even log into my current account that has a full copy of Half Life AND Condition Zero on it, I'm not trusting that piece of crap software with my game.

Sadly, you still need steam to be able to play HL2 online, regardless where you get the game from.

I'm sorry.. but that's his own fault.
Don't use domain email for these kinda things.
No sympathy at all.
2004-10-05, 4:51 PM #18
Um... not really. It's valve's fault for not being able to support a customer, granted that he has the original CD key. I mailed for my CD key to be reset back in July, and after I did, the account I was setting it to stopped working.

well the pre-load got done, i now have a locked copy of HL2 on my comp.

Wait, let me get this straight. Half-life two is done, and you can even have it on your computer, but you can't play it until it is *officially* released? Interesting idea, but it is kind of strange...
Stuff
2004-10-05, 6:57 PM #21
Not strange at all. Think of how much money they save by not buying as much materials for distributable material (manual, CD case, CD, case inserts, box, shipping & handling). Also, they help ensure that server bandwith loads will be much less on the day it comes out by letting people download it before it's officially released.

The only thing they neglect to address is formatting.

2004-10-05, 7:23 PM #23
They don't "neglect to adress" it, you can always redownload it if you still have your account.

Sure, redownloading five gigs or whatever it's going to be would be a hassle, but that's just one of the disadvantages to buying through steam

you can also burn all your gcfs and any custom content to cds or a dvd before formatting or when moving to a new computer

of course some of the gcfs for hl2 are well beyond 700MB

and the preload doesn't include the WHOLE game just the content that isn't going to change... like models, textures, sounds, maps...
