This is, as of this moment, the best film in existence. Undebatable, undeniable, and full of hapiness.

I am, literally, changed as a writer, and as a person and how I view the world.

If you've seen this movie, or read the novel in which it's based on (Which I now must read) than please, tell me about it. Tell me why you like it. Why you hate it.

Is it based on a John Irving novel?
I hear John Irving is a really really good writer.

Cider House Rules
Think while it's still legal.

Did you see that on HBO? I saw it for the first time too last weekend, and I loved it! John Lithgow in drag!

Well, he wrote A Prayer for Owen Meany, which Simon Birch was based off of. He hated the movie so much though that he made them change the characters' names and remove his name from the title.

I didn't like Cider House Rules, but I'm not in the habit of prejudging movies, so I'll have to wait and see this one you mentioned someday, to know whether or not it's worth watching.

Yep.

Oh, and on Simon Birch: As a dwarf myself, I found that movie offensive. And I NEVER take offense to anything. They simply buchered the original meaning of the book, took out all of the real life things, and made it a cutsy little disney movie.

I happend to like that movie thank you very much. I doubt they're intention was to make fun of people with height handicaps.

Well, from everything I hear, it's a rape of the book.

I enjoyed the movie when I saw it years ago. I think that means the book is really excellent.

I think kirby would know. He's a midget.

Which reminds me...who wants to go midget tossing?

Prayer for Owen Meany was awesome.

Simon Birch? Crap.

Intention and final note are two different things. Simon Birch was made out to be a cute, baby-like (Even in his older age), mentally challenged (See book) and simply someone lacking in a personality. Be this horrible acting, the beauty of mothers getting ahold of books and making inspirational tales out of them, or all of the above, I don't know. In any case, the movie is quite offensive, and belittling. After that, people would say to me "Oh, it's a little simon birch, isn't he cute?"

Rather than a character study (Which is what the book is) simon birch is an example of people's blindness to fellow humanity's emotions. Simon birch ended up being a child-like plaything, a dog if you will, in the end. NOTHING like the book. Even these emotions were portrayed in the book, but not in the way that it's accepted, but that it's NOT acceptable.

xone009: From a rather dark and elaborate angle on the entire idea of handicap to a completelly useless old yeller retelling, replacing the dog with a midget.
xone009: That's from the book to the movie in one sentance.

Thanks for the insight. I probably wouldn't have seen it that way myself.

The world according to Garp, I remember watching this when I was 12 or so, can't remember exactly when now but I do remember watching the film in silence and I was a very hyperactive Kid so this was unheard of before that. damned shame robin williams has films like patch adams, mrs doubtfire and Fatherhood on his resume otherwise I would take him serious as an actor.

Oh by the way if you havent already, watch 'what dreams may come' with Cuba Gooding jnr and Robin Williams. THAT film changed me when I saw it a few years ago.
Only Bald men say it is a sign of virility
