Who here knows Scotch?

I recently inherited a quart bottle of Chivas Regal Scotch, bonded in 1954, unopened and still in the original wrapping. It was a gift to my dad from his Commanding Officer back when he was in the Army. Not a drinker of fine drinks, I have decided I did not want to rip this bottle open and down it, because, if I realize I do not like Scotch, I just wasted it.

So, one who isn't very knowledgeable on alcohol, how much would a 50 year old bottle of Chivas Regal probably sell for?

Chivas Regal..half a century old..

save it for very very very special occasions
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

I don't drink, and neither does my father or anyone in my family. There won't be a special occasion. We've had 2 people marry, and it was untouched. None of us dig Scotch, so it's pretty much just there.

After a quick poke around on e-bay, you may be looking at around... $200... but I don't know anything about this, so that may as well be a random number.

25 year old scotch is selling for more than $150 though

Give it to me, I'll drink it when I go to Germany :p
Think while it's still legal.

Save it for your Marriage, or college graduation, or for your relatives. That probably sells for hundreds.

In the meantime--see if you DO like scotch.

By all means dont open it. Alot of money is in that bottle and quite a many people buy aged liqours. A few more years and its worth its weight in gold. Or you could drink it.:D

Drink it. Drinking a finely aged alcohol is something everyone should do at least once.

I've been looking on EBay as well, and all the stuff on there is stuff you can get at your local liquor store. Stuff aged 18 years isn't worth crap. I could go to my local liquor store and pick up a bottle of it aged 18 and pay tops probably $50.

I just thought, its 50 years old. Someone turning 50 would like it, someone who is celebrting a 50th wedding would like it, etc. What I'm going to do probably is put a reserve price on there at an incredibly high price, like $20,000 or something and see what kind of numbers it gets.

Keep it, store it. The cash you'd get from it isn't worth the disappointment if you later find a good time to use it.

Alcohol is a poison,
Old poison is more poisonous,
Therefore, Older alcohol = Win?

So we were talking about alcohol at work today, and my friend said Scotch only ages when it's in the barrel. How long it's been in the bottle is irrelevant.

When you drink it, distill it with alot of water, otherwise Scotch is very harsh.

id still say keep it... for the most part people are stupid... (other then the fine people here on massassi) so id say keep it in the bottle and sell it in about 10-15 years... who knows what might happen to the world wide alcohol market in those years

You must be drinking cheap scotch then because the good stuff is certainly isn't.

Heck, even cheap scotch is not so bad. I will generally pour warm scotch into a glass full of ice, naturally watering it down as the ice melts.

If you aren't much of a drinker I can't really recommend drinking it just to drink it. I guess you could sell it but if I were you I would hang on to it until you have a reason to give it to someone who would appreciate it. Like me!
