Best online vendor for new laptops

I'm trying to find a new laptop for about $700-800. Local newspaper store ads have provided examples that our out of stock when you get to the store. Those are post-rebate prices anyway, which is fine. Anyway, please post links to any good sites you know or any other suggestions. Thanks.

Sucks.

Go for Dell, they make good laptops.

Speaking of Dell...

Have no idea if it's still valid, and it is for a pretty small laptop, but then again your price range isn't very big as far as laptops go.

My mom got a 2500+ 16MB to-go, 512mb PC2700 15.4" (I think) viewable laptop from HP. 800 bucks.

And it works fine (I've used it.) Not to mention the integrated Wireless G.

How long has it been since you've even USED an HP laptop?

Dells are okay, but HPs are by far cheaper and work just fine.

Dells have sucky LCDs. Everyone at school uses Dell laptop, and my Compaq has way more color to it. The Dells look washed out. Mine was cheaper too than the Dell equivalent.

Sounds to me like they're just using lower brightness to make the battery last a little longer.

I know running my D600 at about half-brightness could potentially be considered looking washed out I guess. Crank it up though and it's normal.

No, a buddy of mine and I checked out our screens, side by side. He has a 9100 (Inspiron). The damn thing is like 2 inches thick, with a Radeon 9700 and a "subwoofer" built into the battery. The screen doesn't look darker, it looks bright and washed out - like if you turned the brightnest up and the saturation down. We compared because he saw my screen and was amazed at the colors.

His does higher resolutions than mine, but I like 1280x800 and my better colors :p

Well I have no issues with the color on my D600. It looks great... (As it should for $2.2k)

I'm personally not a big fan of the "home user" Dell laptops, in other words, Inspirons. For the most part they're all built similarly, but I just like the Latitudes overall a lot better.

2.2k? Screw Dell, that's Alienware cash.

Alienware doesn't make high-end Pentium M "business laptops."

They don't? Thought they did.

Well, maybe they do, but you can bet they're just as overpriced as everything else they sell.
2004-10-07, 7:56 PM #14
Last I checked, 2.2k was mid-range for Alienware laptops.

Yep, exactly what I thought, their Pentium M model with similar specs to mine came out $2.6k, and theirs only has a 12.1" screen, whereas mine has a 14.1".

Any thoughts on this HP at the sears.com website?

Go for 512 MB of RAM. Trust me, it'll make all the difference.

30 GB? Roflcopter

This laptop is for a student. Internet access and school work being the primary use. That's why I'm not overly concerned with massive performance. Just FYI.

Yeah, but still, 512 is the minimum to run windows flawlessly. If you wanted performance, I'd suggest Alienware :P
