Would you want to see a remake of JK?
2004-10-08, 8:35 PM #1
I was wondering here and there. Back in the day, JK was a great game, but it suffered from poor graphics quality. Would you want to see a remake of the good ole' game on some kick @$$ engine like Unreal 3? Why?
2004-10-08, 8:39 PM #2
yes and no really. what made JK so great is the fact that it wasn't the greatest graphics, it was the story and the innovation that JK was.

but then again, JK in a kick a$$ new engine, YES PLZ

Sure, JK deserves a remake. I would prefer to see it on the doom3 (non-plastic-y textures this time) or Hl2 engine.

Essentials:

*Improved saber combat. Bring it up to the level of Jo/Ja at least, and maybe improve on it after that.

    * Keep weapons the same. They work nicely together.

    * Improve the architecture of some levels, but keep the general layouts mostly true to the originals.

    *improve enemy ai.

    * keep cog as the scripting language.

    * Keep the same number of force powers, but make them look better.

    * higher poly models, better, more movie-realistic textures and completely redone lighting are a must.

This is like the "classic-classic trilogy" vs the "Special Edition classic trilogy" issue. Sure, a remake would most likely be very good, since we all like the original so much, but it just wouldn't be the same.

I remember when I first played JO, I was disappointed with the movement...I was so used to running and jumping and strafing in JK (it's practically the only game I play) and I guess I expected JO to be exactly like JK with better graphics...nope. Don't get me wrong, I loved JO, but it'll never have JK's spot in my heart.

Besides, pretty much the only reason any of us hang around here talking about JK anymore is because of the editing...with a remake, we'd all have to learn how to edit the game all over again! (And as JO and JA showed, not many of us are too keen on doing that.)

speeding up the player shouldn't be too difficult.

Editing wouldn't be too much of a setback, either. JK remake would most certaintly be a brush engine, and once you learn how to build with brushes, you can apply that knowledge to different games.

Why cog? Why not something like python?

What would it be called? Jedi Knight II?????????
2004-10-08, 10:18 PM #10
Super Jedi Knight
2004-10-08, 10:22 PM #11
It would be called:
Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 II
2004-10-08, 10:27 PM #12
It's called the DFTC for JA.

Well yeah, level editing would be the smallest set back. But model editing, animation editing, even coding...it took me a heck of a long time just to learn how to do this stuff for JK, let alone build up any amount of skill at it. I wouldn't exactly jump at the opportunity to learn it all over again for a new game...

Others may feel differently though. Personally, I'm pretty happy with the Jedi Knight I have. I think if there was a remake, the only advantage it would have over the original would be the graphics, and so to me, it just doesn't seem worth it.

What Page said.

After JA, it would be very nice to have a new JK game with a decent plot...

JK has the best scripting/object system I've ever encountered. Is there anything COG can't do? From the sort of things we've seen in JK, compared to the amount of support we've received from LEC, I think COG reigns supreme, not only in ease of use, but in power.

Yes. But they would probably ruin it, so no.

I agree with Page Wizard.

I've already played Jedi Knight. They shouldn't remake games. They should make sequels that live up to the original in style with better graphics.
2004-10-09, 5:12 PM #27
I'd only want to see a remake if the fans made it.

How about

And COG because COG ro><ors!

Basically, I pretty much agree with all of Page's essentials. :)
