Windows Media Player alternatives
2004-10-17, 8:28 PM #1
I have a confession to make.
My name is happydud... and I have been using Windows Media Player. *sob*

But enough is enough. I need an alternative. Something that loads quickly, is small and doesn't whore resouces, and something non-proprietary windows.

Winamp 3/4/5 is not an option. (2.80 forever!!)

There's Media Player Classic. It pretty much fits that description.

OMG I R KOOL MATYY. GET MPLAYER. IT ROX.
DAT IS ALL.

(If you can make it work it's supposedly awesome, but making it work was far beyond me)

Try 5, just TRY 5, with the default skin on. I dare you to tell me it whores resources. It only does that when you have whorish winamp 3 skins (different shapes and whatnot. Can't think of the name atm.)

BSplayer is pretty good.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Media Player Classic is the best.

OMG I R MIKUS AND I GAVE UP ON MPLAYER CUZ I HAD TO EXTRACT A ZIP FILE!

:p

And anyway, if you do get it working, it plays any and all files without needing any installed codecs, just its own little codec folder. (It'll play major file formats without even that.)

However, it is a slight bit counter-intuitive, but I am biased for it because after you learn how to use it, you never have any reason to use anything else. (And that's besides the fact that this player will play videos faster than every other video player out there. Its the only one that lets my laptop play video files fullscreen without a dropped frame or lost sync)

Anyway, if you don't go that route, use MPC.

Yes! Mplayer > * !!!
2004-10-18, 8:11 AM #16
I just use winamp 5.0, never had any problems with it.
You can't judge a book by it's file size
2004-10-18, 8:29 AM #17
The only thing MPC has over winamp is that it can play various filetypes that winamp can't.

I'm so glad I don't have to infest my machine with Realplayer.
I don't think it can play Quicktime files, though.

It can play Quicktime. It can also play DivX, which is more than I can say for Winamp or WMP. Stupid codecs don't work right for me.

But I use Winamp when I can :D

QuickTime alternative

Real alternative does not support streamed media so it is kinda useless

Tried 5. Hated 5. The default skin is fugly IMO, but that's beside the point.

iTunes > Winamp 5. That's my opinion, and I don't give a damn what the rest of you think. When I need Winamp (which is typically to check an Mp3 before I integrate it with my music library) I use 2.91.

For those who worship Winamp5 for playing videos (and for you too, MZZT, you'll love this):

http://inmplayer.sourceforge.net/

Yeah, its a plugin for Winamp2.x or 5.x that changes the video decoder to Mplayer. That means it uses mplayer to play all files, in winamp. So mplayer is under the winamp skin basically. :D

I still like the good old console for mplayer though.

Oh, and Simbachu:

go to your dos console, go to where mplayer is installed, and type in mplayer dvd://1

Voila :D (Yes sometimes it can be a pain though, I don't blame you for not using it for DVDs)

I use winamp 5 for audio/mp3s, and videolan for video.

Never steered me wrong yet.

I use the WinAmp classic skin, and I've never had any problems. Infact, I've found WA5 to be more stable than WA2.8*

However, since you said that WA3+ isn't an option, I also recommend VideoLAN.

edit: It seems that I'm the same as pagewizard; WA5 for audio, VideoLAN for video.

Mplayer is designed in linux. It was ported to windows :D

You realise that both winamp and media player use DirectShow to display videos, thats why if you have codecs installed they will work in any program.

You keep saying "media player classic will play anything" it will play anything you have the codec installed for.. as will any other directshow application.

Mplayer != media player classic.

Second off, mplayer does NOT use directshow filters. It uses OpenGL as its primary output, with directx as a backup. It has its own set of specially coded codecs, which support literally hundreds of different format types, from real video to quicktime to vivo to cinepak to divx variants.

And the fact that most of its codecs are built right into the program is why it is so great. And if you play more obscure videos, you can even download the full codec pack, which will play anything (at least anything I've ever seen or heard of, and more).

So please, don't misquote me. I never said "Media Player Classic will play anything", I said mplayer will.
