basically the only tutorial i can find is

New Picture in photoshop
Save as Gif
Click Transparency

.....

done this many many times and cannot achieve a transparent background

ok i guess my problem is, how do i know if its a transparent gif i need some medium to test it in.

It is pretty straight-forward in the image viewers irfanview and xnview (I think, must be) to save as transparent gif with user-defined to-be-transparent colour

Just drag into your browser to test or anything with a background you can see through your image
