My voter registration form "lost" in the mail
2004-10-18, 2:30 PM #1
Well, the deadline to register to vote was Oct 4th here. I sent my form in through the mail Sept 18th. Thats more then 2 weeks in advance. Nothing. I wait a few weeks. Nothing. I wait..my republican roomate gets his **** in...me nothing. I call them today, they tell me I am not even on file, and unfortunately the odds are against me that my stuff will show up. Basically I cannot vote in this election. I am not the only newley registered democrat this has happened to. I smell another conspiracy this election year. Oh ya, I am very pissed.

But I think it would be safe to assume that you did not turn 18 in the fall of 2004. I understand the level of Ubuu's frustration; some problems (namely, lack of photographic ID) barred me from registering, and I just barely managed to get arround it in time (I registered at ~4:50PM on October 4th). You should try to consider that all of the options are not always open.

This is not just a voter registration problem. Try to do any business with a government office through the mail and 50% of the time it will get lost. The postal system sucks, the government employee sorting the mail at the destination sucks, the fact that you have to do this over snail mail and not instantly over the internet sucks. The point is, the government screws up everything, which is why I have a really hard time voting for democrats (since they always want to increase government spending and create new government divisions). However, the Republicans are just as bad anymore with the damn patriot act and the dept. of homeland security.

Brian's right. I'm not sure if the government is competant enough to pull off a successful conspiracy on a large scale.

Indeed. They will just lose the conspiracy-planning paperwork.

This is why your country sucks. On this issue though, mine does too.

This must be some conspiracy by the government run postal system to deny all democrats their votes. I mean, the government is republican run right now, it would be so easy!

You would have to know whether or not his state government is run by republicas (I didn't notice if he posted his state). Although (not sure if you were being sarcastic or not), I highly doubt any government sponsored activity would have led to this.

Ubuu, not criticizing you here but, when one is really passionate about ensuring their vote counts they take the extra steps to make sure. You really should have checked prior to the cutoff and then made the trip to the appropriate office if you had to. Just take it as a learning experience, I guess. By the way, what state are you in?

I got my drivers license when I turned 18. When I was picking up my drivers license, they asked if I wanted to register for voting right then. I said sure, signed a paper, and that was it. <3 Ohio.

I have always got the impression that most old democracies have troubles of getting a high number of people to vote. It seems somehow contradictory to make voting even harder by requiring this kind of registration. Surely if somebody is lazy to vote, he will be even less likely to vote if he needs to manually register and then in uncertainty wait for an accreditation.

Although I didn't find, with a brief search, statistics of the situation in the USA, so it might be just a European problem...

Also, did you keep a copy of the form? If so you can probably bring it in there to prove you applied in time and they will let you register. Otherwise, contact your county auditor and complain, I'm sure they will do something for you. Don't give up!

If all else fails... Just stand outside the polls with a paintball gun, and if you see anyone get out of a car with a Bush sticker on it... shoot them repeatedly. Maybe they'll give up and go home.

Yeah, this strikes me as somewhat insane. Being female and brought up in a very feminist environment, I'm incredibly grateful that I am able to vote, but I'm not sure I would have gotten around to registering for stuff. As it was, an enveloped arrived with all the instructions and stuff, and I just went down the road and voted.

Ha! I remember years ago my school was used as a polling station. During our lunch break me and some friends sat on the front lawn and booed all the conservatives as they went past. They seemed to take it in pretty high spirits though.

Some states, like mine, require you to register 30 or 60 days ahead of time. It's pretty ridiculous. I'm not even sure if I'm registered at this point. I may have in my senior year, but I don't remember.

It's a sucky position.
