Had any of you actually gotten Condition Zero you would know that Steam wasn't required for that game as it had its own little thing. I would imagine HL2 would do the same exact thing.

Anything else is MERE SPECULATION

Actually it's not. Everything I said came directly from Valve.

When I suddenly saw the 'Steam Update News' window coming up when I booted my computer, I already found myself mumbling 'Now you're not gonna tell me that they completed it'... and lo and behold, it did. Neat. :D

Although I prefer boxes, DVD Cases, CDs and a good ol' standard manual, I bought an ATI Radeon 9600 a few months ago which gave me the option to get it free via Steam. Granted, I could've also send in the coupon, but it would've been quite a hassle. Besides, currently being out of a job, the option to get HL2 for free via Steam is too tempting. Plus, I do like the fact that I will immediately get to play it once the game has been released in the stores with just the click of a button. Got to play my first few games of Counterstrike too, which was surprisingly fun and an easy way to kill time with.

Besides, it's not as if I'm going to act high and mighty because I have a game in a box :p
The answer is maybe.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. What you're paying for is not so much the physical CD, booklet, plastic packaging, but rather paying for permission to use their product. It is, after all, their product, their creation, you're just buying into a contract that agrees that you can share it. I think it is quite acceptable to pay some amount of money towards that, rewarding the programmers and designers and artists and musicians, giving them the ability to do more of it.

But you would think that through Steam, you'll only be paying that contract, not paying for the CD, booklet, and all that, so the cost should be considerably less, and there's no need for manufacturers or publishers or anything of the kind. The money would be going straight to the programmers and designers and artists and musicians. Well, that's the theory, anyway. And Steam does do some rather odd things.

I don't care if I have to pay more for something, I want the packaging. I still have the boxes from games I bought 10 years ago.

It's right about now that I'm pissed off that my 9600 didn't come with a coupon.

If your username/password is saved on the computer, Steam can work in offline mode when an Internet connection is unavailable, allowing you to play SP games, and MP games on a LAN.

I just checked, for the ATI HL2 voucher holders, Valve gives you a $49,95 rebate if you wish to purchase the silver or gold packages.

Look at the prices. 50 bucks for Bronze that you get over steam or from the store. SWEET, I'M PAYING MORE, BUT I GET LESS!

I also fail to see why you bold "their". It's not like Gabe made the game for himself and you are sharing his shiny toy. No, he made it for the consumer market, which is us not them. We aren't "sharing" anything, unless all of a sudden the world turns upside down, and I start to "share" electricity with my electric company, or "share" my graphics card with ATI. It's not like ATI can come to my house and take my card when they don't feel like "sharing" anymore.

It is infinitely more convenient to download via steam, than to run to the store and try to buy a physical copy when it's possibly already sold out. For me, that makes the higher price worth it. But then again, that's because I can't drive and my parents never take me anywhere, so if I hadn't ordered it through steam it'd be like... a year until I could buy it
Moo.

I'm another of the "getting it free via Steam" people.

CS:Source is okay once in a while, but it's already gotten to be like CS. It's really only playable once in a while because there isn't much variation in the tactics people use, or the gameplay in general. CS:Source is basically just CS with better graphics and HE grenades that do more damage.

I think you guys are failing to factor in the possibility that when you buy the game through Steam that the price of the game also goes towards paying for the server bandwidth in order to get the game to you via Steam. That means they probably take 10 bucks or so out of the price of the game in order to cover the server bandwidth usage, making the price of the game as much as the box you get from the store. It is the same concept as to why you have to pay 15 bucks a month to play a mmorpg. This is just an assumption so I could be wrong but it make perfect sense to me if this were true.
The cake is a lie... THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!

Another thing, when you buy the Silver or Gold package, you also get every other game that's available on steam. Well worth the price, IMO.
