My heart goes out for the hostages and their families.

Agreed, they definitely have my best wishes.

(also, anyone wishing to turn this thread into yet another flamefest, be warned the ice is thin)

Dittoed for emphasis.

I also wish them the best of luck in getting the situation resolved and eventually returning back home to their families. Its absolutely dispicable that they would target civillians in this manner.

WTH? Aren't the Japaneese just peacekeepers?
How can those captors be the same species as us? When things like this happen I loose any and all simpathy that I might have had for their cause. Ugh, I don't think the US judicial system is harsh enough to deal with people like this.

Why the hell? Makes no sense... angering. Yes, let's kidnap people trying to help. Yes, yes indeed.

I could understand asking for the US troops to get pulled out because the US is fighting, but the Japaneese troops are just there as peacekeepers. It just seems like the captors are worrying about the wrong country.

Indeed.. doesn't make any sense. Their plan doesn't seem all that smart either - why just three? It's very unlikely that a country would retreat all it's troops from a large operation just for three people. If I were them, I'd have captured a couple douzen.

After what happened in falluja (sp?)last week, where American 4 CIVILIANS were killed and mutilated, I'm all for bombing falluja to fine powdery residue if they won't hand over the people who planned that act.

We're here to try and help the iraqis set up a free government, and they're killing us instead. It's just like Nam all over again. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Because those killed were private security personel (some news agencies have gone so far as to call them mercenaries), the military doesn't seem to care as much. Don't see why considering the unbelievable brutality displayed.

I understand your frustration and anger Page. I just want you to know that the representation that this thing is a "quagmire" is inaccurate. Great things are taking place over there. There is an evil minority that will committ attrocious acts, which is why we are there, but this is nothing like Vietnam. Vietnam was a disaster for far different reasons and, despite the recent bad news, Iraq is far from a disaster.

God, I hope those hostages are saved and I also hope that Japan doesn't send a message that terrorists can blackmail them. This makes me sick.

Well, they may have their reasons for being angry. I mean, people being this angry has a reason. Not everyone wanted this change, but it happened anyway. It's like someone coming over and replacing our democracy with a monarchy. It's different, and they don't like it because they didn't decide it. It may actually be better for them in the long run, but it wasn't their choice. They didn't do it, a foreginer did. And that makes the way things are all the more alien and horrible to some. I see them like the immune system during a bad transplant. The new heart is there to save them, they will die without it, but it's a foregin object, and must be destroyed.

The outlets for their anger, not the reasons, are what I find most disturbing. It's not the civillian/soldier's fault that they are there. If they have a problem with the change of government, they should do something people will sympathize with. Peaceful protest, or some vein such as that. I've never seen a case where peaceful organized efforts have failed or violence has prevailed. Sure for the short term that may not be true, but in the long term it really seems the more civil way wins out.

I don't know why the hell they will think this will work. I guess the results of the action in Spain have made them think that terrorism is truly effective. But I think we will see in the long term it will only result in them getting crushed. Really, do they think we will let them get away with any of this? We will just say "ok, we settle, you can go on your merry way". When has that ever happened?

If the best tactic they can come up with is to piss off the British, Israelis and Japanese (to say nothing of the US), they have condemned themselves to their fate.

Don't they have history class in Iraq?
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

They're being held by a lunatic fringe of an already unstable and fragmented resistance. I very much doubt their captors have given any thought at all to the repercussions.

The four civilians killed in Falluja were armed personel from a private security firm being paid up to $30,000 a month to provide dubious services (interesting article here). If the first RPG hadn't taken out their SUV, they would have certainly fired back. In any case, they were dead by the time the mob got to them. It's not like they were tortured.

I hate to say this, but if they found the location, they'd have little to lose in a raid. I think we'd all agree those hostages would rather suffer death from a gun shot, than being burnt alive.
