So my boyfriend is taking me to meet his parents Saturday. I've heard of people giving the parents a token gift of some kind. What do you think of this practice? I know his mom has a collection of gargoyle statues, I thought I would get her a small one. Is that a dumb?

Yes, that is very a dumb.

Yes, get her a small statuette. It's a good practice to bear a gift when visiting someone of some importance for the first time. It disarms them and shows good will. Since you know hwat she likes, it shows thoughtfullness as well.

An excellent idea.

Just be yourself. Parents have a way of seeing right through people, when their children are involved. There's nothing wrong with giving a gift, but don't spend too much, because then it looks suspiciously like a bribe, instead of a sign of respect.

Yeah, box of chocolates, bottle of wine, that sort of thing.

If you're eating, something to go with the meal.

Just check with your boyfriend first, I imagine taking pork rinds to the Jewish in-laws would not be a good idea.

I'd go with the box of chocolates idea. Something simple.

See, girls have it easy.
Boys have to go shopping with her dad. Once you two are alone in the car on the way to wherever you two are going, then there is no escape.

He'll do all the clichés. Tell racy jokes to see if you laugh, ask about your favourite sports teams, or who you voted for in the previous elections. He'll put on the radio and tell you to find a good station. You're under the magnifying glass. It's like one of those bad rom-coms. Art imitating art or life imitating art? :)
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Hehe... I'm reminded of the scene from "Meet the Parents".
