I can see a lot of Aussies just pirating the game. Hell if nothing else they could buy it through steam.

HL2 sounds even better now :p :p

It won't happen, trust me....and even in some bizarre twist of events it does, HL2 is way cheaper on Steam than in Australian stores anyway.

Seriously, EB here is charging $99.95 AU for the bronze boxed version.....I just pre-ordered the Silver version over Steam for $20 AU cheaper.

what's with all the censorship in europe and australia?

Why is it up to an arbitrary group to decide what gets censored and whats not?
2004-10-24, 7:08 PM #12
Surely they aren't serious. Doom 3 was violent and bloodthirsty yet passed OFLC classifaction with MA15+ (which is the highest a video game can be classified here in Aussieland without being banned outright), HL2 would need to be as violent as Manhunt before it could be banned.

I couldn't imagine it happening, but if it does, I expect gamers would kick up a huge stink about it.

manhunt isn't all that bad, IMO. Sure, you play the role of a cold blooded killer, but the enemy meshes don't deform well (if at all) so it isn't *that* realistic.

Manhunt wasn't banned in australia ... it passed with no problems apart from certain lobby groups. It was banned in NZ though.

You sure? I could have sworn Manhunt was banned here a few weeks back, after it was sent back to the OFLC for re-classsifcation by the Attorney-General.

EDIT: Just checked the OFLC website, it still has it's MA rating.

You're right ... geeez I haven't been following news.
2004-10-24, 8:04 PM #17
There are very, very few games which have not simply recieved the MA15+ rating and been released. The writer of that article must not know much about about the Australian OFLC, that's the way it works down here. A game has to be extremely offensive to not just recieve the highest rating.

Don't worry, England has even less censorship than the US.

Damn it! How can you pay for stuff over steam? And can you create a "physical" copy? I need to talk my parents into letting me use their credit card, or something. Damn things are useless except when you need to get stuff off the internet. There should be a way to just direct-debit from my bank account or something...

If the Government bans Half Life 2 then pressure to create an "R" rating will increase dramatically.

Steam works in the fact that once you own it, you own it. If you have to format... You just download it again. Correct me if I'm wrong. You only pay once, and you just download a trillion times if you have to.

Yes, but what happens when Steam, or Valve, is no longer around? I still have an original copy of King's Quest 1; Sierra, in its current zombie form, barely acknowledges that any game older than two years exists. I can't just trust that Steam, or my account thereon, is going to exist forever; a box and CD will (well, more or less). Additionally, I've heard that people find their accounts just stop working. I really don't want to waste a hundred dollars just to find my account has been disabled for some reason in a year or two.

Here's a good example stolen from gamereactor.se :
A developer from Germany makes a game called Singles: Flirt up Your Life, which is a Sims clone which features full frontal nudity and non-pornographic sex between consenting adult-characters. Nobody minds.
It can't get officially released in the United States due to sex being such a taboo.

Then we have Ninja Gaiden.
Spurting blood by the bucket-load and decapited noggins rolling around. It gets greeted with open arms in the United States, yet gets censored in Germany and has its decapitations removed elsewhere in the ELSPA area.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Get a debit card. Seriously, go down to your bank and ask them about it.

With broadband (and no per-minute charges) just leave it on overnight, when you're at work, when you're out etc.

With the introduction of online game purchase/download, and the widespread availability of broadband, interested gamers will doubtless get hold of games despite ratings etc.

I'm sure the laws will catch up eventually, they may have already? Anyone know whether or not it would be legal to download a copy of HL2 in Oz if this goes through?

The Democrats are not exactly progressive, either.

why is it the governments responsibility to do that? Are people really so stupid that they can't decide what is suitable for themselves? If so, I have little faith in the future of our species.

If you have a friend who has a hard copy of the game, I believe (don't quote me on this) the CD key you get from Steam will work with a hard copy of the game.

In such days that Valve no longer exists, it'll be really easy to snag a copy of HL2 off of eBay for cheapness.

I thought you could backup Steam files to DVD/CD to some degree so you don't need to re-download everything on formats?

Also, been killing some time playing CS: Source......my first experience with any CS. It's ok I guess, I just really don't get what all the fuss is about. Oh, and Dust is a terrible terrible level.

.

I think it's more of a problem with the media than with the general population.

I like Dust. It's small, but it's fun. More-so for 3v3-6v6 games, especially when you have a good team. Good communication can make or break you.
