Do you think Michael Moore...
2004-10-25, 12:04 PM #1
...will really move to Canada if George W. Bush is re-elected?

This isn't a poll, this is a discussion.

I don't think he will, because he can continue making a lot of money in the US, considerably more than he could in Canada. I'd imagine.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Well I knows he's making another documentary on POVs, or MTVs, or KFCs, or ABCs, or whatever the hell those medical guys are with the three letters. So no, I don't think he'll be going to Canada.

HMOs! Yea, it's going to be on HMOs. And I personally think Michael Moore is a pain in the ***, but in a good way. He has to balls to do things that other people are afraid to do, and ask questions other people are afraid to ask.

If Dubya gets re-elected, I am going to write a letter asking him if Canada can have some nukes. I'll just tell him that the Cold War has started up again; he'll believe me. Who do you think told him that Saddam had WMDs?

I think Michael Moore will probably come to Canada. If he stays in the US just because he can make more money there, then he wouldn't exactly be living up to his ideals.

america is canada's business. canada is america's business.
something like a billion dollars a day cross the border at detroit / windsor. that's just canadian and american goods.
when america places higher tarrifs on tomatoes from canada, that's my business.
when america places higher tarrifs on soft wood from canada, that's my business.
when america stops taking cattle from canada, that's my business.
when america takes jobs from canada, that's my business.
when america wants our laws to coincide (sp?) with theirs, that's my business.
when america...

(i could go on for a very very very very very very long time here but i'll spare you)

so, me and about 30,000,000 other people here are very concerned one way or the other what happens in your federal election. just as you americans should be in ours.

Mad cow was just a scare, there was no real danger as long as the proper precautions were taken.

That's what I was about to say.

But I didn't scare Bush into closing the border. :p

Sorry, but they halted the xfer of beef for a reason, and a good one. They would have done it to any other country as well.

He was being sarcastic about SARS.

And Evad--it's easier to say that on your end than on ours. It's not exactly like it's helping our economy to not trade with you guys. And maybe it's partially punishment for not joining the war--but it still has valid reasoning behind it.

The US banned imports from Canada for one isolated case - where the cow was never slaughtered for human consumption. The only other recent case of BSE in Canada happened 10 years ago.

For years, Canada had been virtually free of mad cow disease. But in May 2003, veterinary officials in Alberta confirmed that a sick cow sent to a slaughterhouse in January of that year had been inspected, found to be substandard, and removed so that it would not end up as food for humans or other animals. The carcass was, however, sent to a processing plant for rendering into oils. Its head was kept for testing. Samples were sent to the world testing laboratories in the U.K., which confirmed the case of mad cow.

"What is important is that the system worked," said Alberta's agriculture minister, Shirley McClellan. "We have a very thorough and respected inspection system." She was insistent to remind the public that the disease is not contagious within a herd.

But McClellan's assurances didn't stop the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Australia and other countries from imposing temporary import bans of Canadian beef.

Having one cow infected and being properly taken care off hardly warrants such a long ban of trades. The US had a confirmed case of BSE in Washington state and Canada was almost hesitant to restrict exchange.

Two cases, one of which actually manifested in the U.S.

ask the cattle farmers in some of the neighbouring states. especially alaska. they have been asking for months now to have the ban lifted. they have documentation showing there is no risk by opening the border to canadian cattle. they've had it for months. they've paid for the studies themselves.

To the best of my knowledge, there is not a single case of a human ever catching mad cow disease. Until there is, I don't care where my beef comes from.

I saw Fahrenhype911 last night. It was disappointing. It brought up some really good points against Moore's movie, however a majority of the film was mostly people's opinions--conservative drum beating. It's designed pretty much to preach to the choir. What was particularly frustrating was that the film employed many of the same techniques they criticized Moore for: taking quotes and clips out of context, passing opinions as fact, and attempting to play with people’s emotions. Plus, it features the ever-endearing Ann Coulter and contains a bigoted remark against the French. Save your yourself the time and effort and simply find an article online refuting Moore because the film certainly isn't worth it.

Hey, I'm not saying it was right, but to say that Bush is/was "punishing" Canada is rather...well, an act made out of ignorance.

hmmm... i think he shows the other side of the media.
i think he's an ***, but i think he gets people thinking. even if they think he's an *** and they talk about what he's trying to do, he gets people talking about an extremely important issue for this election.
and he's doing a good job of that. people are talking about it.

i honestly think that some of what the american government is doing with it's trade with canada these past 18 months, is in some way an 'oh yeah? well take that.' statement.
some of what's being done is extreme for 2 partners with such a long and healthy relationship.
i'm sorry but i'm not going to post links. don't have time. but it's easy to find the differences in our trade relations over the past 3 years.

and that's all of our business (americans and canadians). either side, speak out. for both of our governments.

i know sine gets all pissed off at me when i criticize the us government and some of it's policies, but it's because it 100% directly affects me.

I wish moore would go drown in a ditch, seriously what is he achieving? Ok, so he has films that express is opininated liberal extremist and usually WRONG view of the Bush administration, he as well takes things out of context and twists them to use to his advantage.

So what has his opininated BS done? Why, it's inspired mass amounts of bandwagoners to say "Bush sucks and now I don't have to get up off my *** to find why I would say that!" Something that's only happened since...oh about every other anti-bush liberal extremist has expressed some overhyped and twisted view on things. First it was the dixie chicks, then moore, now green day's american idiot.

moore is just a spokesperson for the bandwagoners, I'll never take him seriously.

Btw...just so anyone rabid moore supporters (because I've been accused of this when speaking against moore) I'm not pro-Bush. I'm not even pro-Kerry. I'm pro-I'll legally be able to not worry about voting between two idiots even though I turn 18 this year.

I'm just so damn tired of hearing one side bash the other and using attacks as a way to further a compaign for a specific person. Just like all these damn tv ads where they have to either bash bush or kerry, it's pathetic. Where the hell are the talks about bettering something and backing it with proof? They're too busy going "nannanana I'm not him, he did this and I'll do something different but no telling you because you're the public!"

So what does moore do? He supports that type of politics with his own BS version of that.

It's not going to end, but sure enough he'll blame it all on bush.

Canada? Isn't that the 51st state?

As far as the whole Moore issue, we had him visit our school (Utah Valley State College, for those interested) this last week. I personally haven't seen anyone actually thinking about the issues because of his visit, merely arguing over why we would have someone like Moore come to speak to use, especially for the 50,000 dollars that it cost the school to have him come visit. We could have spent much less and brought a much more creadible person to come, but of course, pubilicity wouldn't have been nearly as high.
Life is beautiful.
