Increasing Default Packet Size [Kinda Important]
2004-04-09, 1:17 PM #1
Ok here's the background:

With the way our [only broadband available in the area] wireless/satellite isp works with error-checking and buffering everything gets padded to like x bytes [say 1500] or whatever even if it's like a 5byte packet.. which just hugely increases throughput.

Especially when you have HORRIBLEEFFICIENCY IM protocols [um like all of them], that send out like 4 or 5 packets a second for updates and server checkes and stuff.

The Rub: Apparently the ISP has been complaining about 'persistent' high-packet-count traffic or something to that effect. As best i can tell this is probably in reference [though they haven't complained about it before in the last year or so] to have AIM/ICQ/MSN/IRC connected all the time.

The Query: Is there a good way to bundle lots of smaller packets together and only send out these larger bundles at lesser intervals and bandwidth. Someone tells me this can be accomplished by increasing the default packet size and referred me to DSL Reports. But i have not found anything there that seems to indicate how to do this.

I've already kinda elected to drop my msn connection as i don't talk to anyone on that that i don't have on aim as well. And icq i'm still working on converting my one contact over to aim as well.

Thus: Any input or assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

You dont wanna do that i think.
Thats because routers are programmed to support the default packet size, which is a maximum of 1518 bytes. Anything over that will be discarded.
So I think if you increase your packet size, the routers will ignore you.

The issue being that the IM protocols send out billions of tiny like 5-10byte packets or whatever just as their little server status client whatever the fruitcake updates. Which when they all get padded to whatever size, gets to be a bit taxing on throughput.
Thus it'd be ideal if could compile them.

I think you could do this with packet routing, but that's not really what it's for. It's mostly for keeping tabs on what information is going to and from a computer. But if you routed all your packets through a specific port and then set a latency that would allow them to get backed up periodically that would be ideal...
