it seems most of the poeple where im at use AIM, i was wondering if there were alternatives to getting it, downloading aol related things makes my skin crawl

Gaim and Miranda IM are excellent and free. I recommend Gaim over Miranda just because it's more "complete" and doesn't leave out features from the AOL client like Miranda tends to. Miranda is very minimalistic. But both clients are quite customizable, especially after plugins.

You could give Trillian a try, but its not as good as it was 2-3 years ago.

trillian isn't what it used to be... i recommend gAIM or if you're on a mac iChat is the best :)

For the Mac, there is also Fire.

Trillian might not be what it used to, be I hardly notice. Mainly because I wasn't using it during those times. Reguardless, it does what I need, and it does it in a pretty simple fashion.
